JACKSON, Miss. — Sunday's finale never quite slowed down for Prairie View A&M, as the Panthers found themselves chasing early and couldn't recover in a 15-4 loss to Jackson State.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, there were flashes of fight from the Panthers' lineup. Ryland Duson set the tone at the plate, reaching every time he stepped in and finishing a perfect 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Jackson State jumped ahead quickly, putting pressure on Prairie View A&M starter Kamar Dove (0-4) from the outset. The Tigers built a 4-0 lead by the third inning before Basilio Williams provided a spark for the Panthers. With two outs and little momentum, Williams launched a solo shot to get Prairie View on the board and briefly shift the energy.
That momentum proved short-lived, however, as the Tigers continued to pile on runs, stretching their lead to 15-1 and putting the game out of reach heading into the late innings.
Still, the Panthers didn't go quietly.
In the seventh, Prairie View A&M showed resilience, stringing together quality at-bats to produce their best inning of the day. Ethan Walker delivered the big swing with a two-run single, part of a three-run surge that trimmed the deficit to 15-4. It was a glimpse of the offensive potential the Panthers continue to search for as they push through conference play.
On the mound, Oliver Brown provided a steadying presence out of the bullpen, tossing two scoreless innings while striking out three and keeping the Tigers from adding to their total late.
Prairie View A&M drew four walks and battled through 43 Jackson State hitters defensively, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
The Panthers will look to regroup and carry the momentum from their late-inning push into their next outing as they host Our Lady of the Lake University at Tankersley Field with a 2:00 first pitch.
