Prairie View A&M shoots 50 percent from deep, defeats Texas Southern 70-59

HOUSTON, TX --The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team shot 50 percent from beyond the arc on the way to a 70-59 win against the Texas Southern Tigers on the road Thursday.

The Panthers (14-17, 9-9) had three players score in double figures, led by Dontae Horne, who had 26 points and six rebounds. Cory Wells tacked on 20 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks and Elijah Mitchell helped out with 10 points off the bench.

Prairie View A&M utilized great ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up 16 assists on 24 made field goals. Lance Williams' six assists paced the Panthers.

Prairie View A&M's defense held Texas Southern to only 12.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 30.4 percent from the field.

How It Happened

After falling behind 28-27, Prairie View A&M went on an 11-0 run with 4:11 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Wells, to take a 38-28 lead. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 38-30 advantage. Prairie View A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down nine shots to account for 27 of its 38 points.

Following intermission, Prairie View A&M kept widening that lead, expanding it to 49-39 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Horne's layup, to grow the lead to 57-39 with 9:45 to go in the contest. The Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 70-59 win. Prairie View A&M made the most of seven offensive rebounds to tack on five second chance points out of 32 total in the period.
