PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M softball team opened SWAC play in dominant fashion, sweeping a doubleheader from Southern on Thursday at the PVAMU Softball Complex. The Lady Panthers claimed a 9-1 run-rule victory in Game 1 before following with a 9-3 win in Game 2 to improve to 10-11 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Game 1 | Prairie View A&M 9, Southern 1
Prairie View A&M jumped out early and never looked back, cruising to a 9-1 run-rule victory in five innings.
The Lady Panthers struck first in the opening inning when Aryana Cruz drew a bases-loaded walk to give PVAMU a 1-0 lead. Prairie View A&M broke the game open in the second inning, plating four runs, highlighted by an RBI single from Mia Nunez to push the lead to 5-0.
PVAMU continued to apply pressure throughout the game, adding another run in the third before sealing the victory with a three-run fifth inning. Nunez delivered again with a two-run single to cap the scoring.
Kayla Adams (5-4) earned the win in the circle, tossing five innings while allowing just one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
The Lady Panthers dominated offensively with 13 hits, led by Kayla Zaid, who recorded three hits. Five Panthers registered multiple hits in the game, while the team swiped eight bases, including three from Jade Uresti and two from Zaid.
Game 2 | Prairie View A&M 9, Southern 3
Prairie View A&M carried the momentum into the second game, using timely hitting and strong pitching to secure a 9-3 victory.
The Panthers got on the board in the first inning when Mia Nunez blasted a two-out solo home run to give PVAMU an early 1-0 lead. Prairie View A&M extended the advantage in the third inning with three runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Morgan Smith to make it 4-0.
Southern trimmed the deficit to 4-3 before the Panthers erupted in the sixth inning. Prairie View A&M scored five runs in the frame, with Smith delivering again with another two-run single to help seal the win.
Yazmyn Stewart (3-2) went the distance in the circle, striking out six while allowing three runs on six hits.
Smith led the Panthers at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs, while Nunez finished 2-for-4 with a home run. Prairie View A&M recorded 11 hits in the contest and stole six bases as a team.
Prairie View A&M and Southern will conclude the three-game series on Friday with a noon first pitch at the PVAMU Softball Complex.
