Waskyla Cullivan

Prairie View A&M head baseball coach Waskyla Cullivan begins his seventh year as the team's head coach and 13th year apart of the Panther baseball program.

Cullivan is coming off a 2014 SWAC Baseball Tournament Semifinal Appearance which included a memorable eight-run comeback win against SWAC West Champion Arkansas-Pine Bluff.  He also helped usher in a new era of Panther baseball as the renovated Tankersley Field opened in 2014.

Once again, Cullivan had the Panthers playing for the ultimate prize as they advanced to the championship game of the 2013 SWAC Baseball Tournament for the sixth time in the past nine years.  Getting to the title game was no easy feat as the Panthers battled back from an opening round loss en route to winning four consecutive games for the right to play in the title game for the second straight year.

In leading Prairie View A&M to the 2012 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship, Prairie View A&M coach Waskyla Cullivan accomplished something that had only been done twice before in school history in earning the Panthers an automatic bid in an NCAA regional.  The Panthers arguably had their best regional performance in program history as they fell to Rice by only one run and Sam Houston State by two runs.

The Panthers went 4-1 in the SWAC Tournament, defeating Mississippi Valley State 7-4 in the championship game on May 20. The Panthers ended the regular season with a 28-23 record  for consecutive winning seasons.

In 2011, Cullivan came full circle as he guided the Panthers to their first winning season since 2007 with a 25-21 record. The Panthers won six-of-eight conference weekend series and returned to the SWAC Tournament for the first time in three seasons.

After a successful 2004 season, Cullivan was instrumental in helping move the Panthers to the next level as they finished in third place in the SWAC West and clinched the school’s first-ever berth in the SWAC Tournament in 2005. The Panthers went on to make their first-ever appearance in the SWAC championship game where they finished as the runner-up.

The Panthers built on their success in 2005 and continued their ascension up the baseball ladder by capturing their first-ever SWAC Western Division Title and a number one seed in the SWAC Tournament in 2006.

In the team’s second postseason appearance, the Panthers notched an undefeated record in tournament play (4-0) and earned the school’s first-ever SWAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Baseball Tournament.

In 2007 the Panthers repeated as SWAC Champions once again going undefeated thru tournament play as they claimed back-to-back SWAC titles.

Cullivan began his coaching career on the high school level at Forest Brook High School in Houston, where he helped develop one of the top baseball programs in the state. In 2002, the Jaguars went to the Class 4A state tournament, which marked the first time since integration in Texas that a predominately black high school had reached the state tournament.

A native of Ville Platte, La., Cullivan is a 2000 graduate of Prairie View A&M University with Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Human Performance.
