Joaquin Garcia joined the Prairie View A&M football coaching staff in May, 2016, after a four-year stint on the coaching staff at Houston.

In Garcia's first season, Terrence Singleton led the team in tackles (70), interceptions (three), and pass breakups (10) in earning second-team All-SWAC honors. Singleton also returned an interception for touchdown and also scored on a defensive two-point return.

In his second season (2017) at the helm of the cornerbacks Ju'Anthony Parker (5-11, 165; So., Dallas, Texas) was second in the SWAC in interceptions (four) and tied for conference leading in interception returns for touchdowns (two). Parker had 28 tackles, nine passes defensed and one fumble recovery. He returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns (37 yards at Alabama St; 44 yards against Bacone), leading him to garnish first-team All-SWAC honors.

Garcia served as the Cougars’ special teams quality control coach during his first three seasons before moving into the role of defensive analyst in 2015. During his four years at Houston, the Cougars went 34-18 and appeared in bowl games three consecutive years.

Garcia was a part of the Houston’s memorable the 2015 season that saw the Cougars win the American Athletic Conference championship before defeating nationally-ranked Florida State in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. The Cougars finished the season with a 13-1 record and ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press poll, their highest ranking to finish a season since 1979, when Houston was ranked No. 5.

A native of Katy, Texas, Garcia was part of three state championship teams with the Tigers – one as a player during his senior season, and two as an assistant coach during a six-year tenure from 2006 to Spring, 2012. While part of the Katy High School coaching staff, Garcia worked with defensive backs, outside linebackers, and special teams units.

Before he returned to his high school alma mater, Garcia also had coaching stints at area high schools Deer Park (2005-06) and Houston Westbury (2004-05). He began his coaching career at Quail Valley Middle School in Missouri City in 2003.

As a player, Garcia was a three-year letterwinner at cornerback for Katy, graduating in 1998. He served as one of the team captains during the Tigers’ Class 5A Division I state championship in 1997.

Garcia continued his football career in college as he was a member of Texas Lutheran University’s first two varsity football teams in 1998 and 1999 after the college resurrected the program after a 10-year hiatus. Garcia played in 19 of TLU’s 20 games during those two seasons, recording three interceptions and 51 tackles.

Garcia later transferred to Texas Tech, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration/management information systems and general business in May, 2003. He received his master’s degree in educational administration from Lamar University in 2011.
