Williams joined the Prairie View A&M University coaching staff on Aug. 25, 2022, after a year stint at Alabama A&M. He brings 11 years of coaching experience, nine at the collegiate level, to “The Hill”.
As Defensive Coordinator for Alabama A&M (’21-’22), Williams helped guide the Bulldogs to a six-win improvement in conference play reaching 10 wins, the highest conference win total in eight years. The Bulldog's defense in SWAC play finished ranked 1st in Opponent FG % and 1st in Team Defensive Rebounds, key in reaching a SWAC high six-game winning streak, fifth-place finish, and first appearance in the 2022 SWAC Tournament semifinals since 2014. Williams also helped develop SWAC First-Team and All-Tournament team performer Jalen Johnson. He joined the Panther staff on Aug. 25, 2022.
During his time with TSU he served as the director of operations for the men’s basketball program in 2018-19 and as an assistant coach from 2019-21. Williams was instrumental in the Tigers’ success as the team reached the 2019 College Insider Tournament (CIT) semifinals and won the 2021 SWAC Tournament. During the latter season, they qualified for the NCAA Tournament and won a First Four game against Mount St. Mary’s before falling to Big Ten and Power 5 member Michigan.
While, in Houston, he helped develop three All-Conference members, two Newcomer of the Year honorees, and Tournament MVP Michael Weathers. Williams was also instrumental in producing two All-Tournament athletes, three Athlete of the Week honorees and Jeremy Combs being named SWAC Player of the Year.
Prior to his success at TSU he served as assistant coach and spent a pair of seasons with Illinois Central Community College from 2015-17. During that time the Cougars had two members earn First Team All-Mid-West Athletic Conference (MAC) honors and three players named to the All-Region XXIV Team.
In his time in Nashville at Tennessee State, he spent one year as a video coordinator for the Tigers men’s basketball team serving under Dana Ford during the 2014-15 season.
Williams got his start in the SWAC at Grambling as an assistant coach during the 2013-14 season and while there he helped develop a SWAC First-Team All-Conference selection in Antwan Scott as well as three league Player of the Week honorees.
He would begin his collegiate career with NAIA Division I Benedict University in 2012-13 serving as an assistant coach. There he helped produce an All-Conference Honorable Mention and a pair of Academic All-Conference Players.
William’s first head coaching job came at Wentzville Holt High School in Wentzville, Missouri in 2011-12, where he led his team to runner-up finishes in the Gateway South Conference and District 6 Tournament. Additionally, he produced two athletic Gateway All-American performers during the 2011-12 season.
As a student-athlete, Williams signed with Creighton University after graduating from Marion High School in 1990. During his time there the Blue Jays won the 1991 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament and went on to advance to the NCAA Tournament Second Round. He would then transfer to Morehead State where he played from 1991-94. He went on to earn All-Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) honors, finishing with 1,083 points, 378 rebounds, and 222 assists.
A native of Marion, Indiana, Williams earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Morehead State in 1995. He and his wife Adrea have two daughters, Jazmyn and Olivia, and a son, Johnnie III.
