Landon Bussie

Landon Bussie is entering his sixth season as an assistant coach for the Prairie View A&M Panthers.  Bussie last served as an assistant on the women's side for one season and was involved with the day-to-day operations of the program, with a special emphasis on recruiting and guard development.

During the 2019-20 season Bussie played a intricate role in assisting the Panthers to a back-to-back regular season championship campaign, before being halted on the way to a second crown after defeating Alabama A&M in the quarterfi.nal game

Bussie played an integral part of the development of Zachary Hamilton, who became a Top 10 scorer in Panther Basketball history. Last season the Panthers won 11 of the final 14 games and advanced to the SWAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2015. He also helped guard Taishaun Johnson develop into a key role-player on Prairie View A&M's historic 2019 conference championship team.

Bussie's prowess on the recruiting trails and player evolution has continued to shine during his tenure on the Panthers' staff as he has had a significant roles in the development of some of the greatest to ever wear the purple and gold in recent memory. Among the players Bussie has either recruited and/or mentored toward greatness includes All-SWAC performer and SWAC Tournament MVP Gary Blackston, who became one of the most dynamic guards in program history following an illustrious career where he amassed more than 1,000 points. Bussie also helped oversee the development of Devonte Patterson, who blossomed into one of the most dominating players in the SWAC as evidenced by back-to-back First Team All-SWAC selections and the 2019-2020 SWAC Player of the Year honor. Additionally, Bussie was instrumental in the growth of Chancellor Ellis, who cemented his place in Panther lore as one of the top sharpshooters the Hill has ever seen.

While on the women's staff, Bussie played a key role in the development of guard Jeanette Jackson during the 2014-15 campaign as she finished as the SWAC's Player of the Year, scoring and assists leader while also finishing in the SWAC’s Top 10 in six statistical categories.  Alexus Parker also flourished under his watch as Parker doubled her scoring average after the midway point of the  season and finished as the top perimeter player in both field goal percentage and rebounding in SWAC play. As a team, the Lady Panthers captured a pair of non-conference wins over Houston and Sam Houston State. 

Prior to his time at Prairie View A&M, Bussie spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the Xavier University of Louisiana men’s basketball team, and completed two years as a graduate assistant.  At Xavier, Bussie helped guide the squad to three Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Regular-Season Conference Championships (2012, 2013, and 2014), with four consecutive appearances at the NAIA National Championship Tournament. In addition, six Gold Rush players added all-conference honors to their resumes' during Bussie’s tenure.

Bussie was a two-year letterman as a forward for the men’s basketball team at Xavier University of Louisiana, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2010. He later earned a master’s degree in educational leadership in 2014.

Bussie is a graduate of Woodlawn High School and went on to play two seasons for Livingstone College of the CIAA (NCAA Division II) before transferring to Xavier.

Bussie is the son of Loretta Bussie and the late Gerald Bussie and has two siblings, brother, Gerald, and sister Asya. Asya was an All-American standout at West Virginia University before being drafted by the Minnesota Lynx as the 15th-overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft.
