Gonzales, a graduate of Hempstead High School, was appointed the Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for women's basketball at Prairie View A&M University on October 23, 2024. Before joining "The Hill," he served as the top assistant coach for women's basketball at Nicholls State University during the 2022-2023 season.
While in Thibodaux, La., Gonzales played a pivotal role in the development of freshman post player Lexi Alexander, who earned the title of Southland Conference Freshman Player of the Year in March 2023. Prior to his time at Nicholls, he was the head coach at LSU Eunice, where he led the women's basketball program to a successful era, capturing two LCCAC titles in three years and achieving four postseason victories—something the Bengals hadn't accomplished in over a decade before his arrival.
Under Gonzales's leadership, LSUE produced three consecutive Louisiana Community Colleges Athletic Conference (LCCAC) Players of the Year: Ava Jones (2019-20), Alona Washington (2020-21), and Tahjea Smith (2021-22). Notably, Jones became the first Bengal to earn a spot on the All-Region 23 team.
In his inaugural season, Gonzales guided the Bengals to a remarkable 21-7 record, winning the LCCAC conference championship with an undefeated league record. His efforts earned him the Louisiana Sportswriters Association (LSWA) Coach of the Year award for the 2019-2020 season, making him the first coach from an NJCAA institution to receive this honor, encompasses all NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA schools in Louisiana.
Gonzales continued his success with another LCCAC Regular Season Championship in 2021, achieving an 18-4 record and securing two wins in the Region 23 Tournament. The team was led by Alona Washington, who was recognized as the LCCAC Player of the Year and a Second-Team LSWA All-Louisiana selection. Additionally, Gonzales's squad recorded their first win over a ranked opponent in nearly a decade, defeating Blinn College 64-53 at home on February 10.
With twelve seasons of coaching experience across high school, junior college, and Division I levels, Gonzales served as an Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Sam Houston State University during the 2017-18 season, marking one of three tenures with the Bearkats. His history with Sam Houston includes roles as a graduate assistant (2013-14) and a student assistant (2006-07).
Gonzales brings extensive junior college experience, having worked at several prestigious programs. As an assistant at Odessa College in 2016-17, he was instrumental in building a team that finished with a 29-2 record and reached the Elite Eight of the NJCAA National Tournament. His recruiting efforts that year resulted in eight student-athletes receiving NCAA Division I offers.
His coaching journey also includes positions at Hill College, Arizona Western College, and Neosho County Community College, along with coaching boys’ teams at various high schools in Texas and Louisiana.
A Veteran of the United States Armed Forces, he served eight years as a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) crew member in the U.S. Army. After serving in the military Gonzales earned a degree in Kinesiology from Sam Houston State in 2007.
