Darren Garrigan

Darren Garrigan, known as Coach “DG,” is in his first season at Prairie View A&M University, where he coaches the secondary and serves as the program’s NFL Liaison.

In his first year leading the Panthers’ secondary, Garrigan’s unit emerged as one of the top defensive groups in all of FCS football. Prairie View A&M ranked No. 1 nationally in pass defense, third-down defense, and fewest passing touchdowns allowed, while also finishing No. 2 in pass defense efficiency, No. 2 in fewest passing yards allowed, and No. 3 in scoring defense. The unit ranked top 10 nationally across multiple defensive categories and led the SWAC in 12 statistical categories during conference play. Under his guidance, Eric Zachery and Travor Randle earned All-Conference honors, with Randle also being named an All-American. Garrigan also served as a coach in the Legacy Bowl, further highlighting his reputation for developing elite defensive talent.

Prior to joining PVAMU, Garrigan spent one season at Valdosta State University, helping lead the Blazers to a 13-1 record and a Gulf South Conference Championship. His secondary led the conference in multiple defensive categories, including scoring defense and passing defense, while producing a Defensive Player of the Year and multiple All-Americans.

Garrigan previously coached at Texas Southern University, where his secondary led the SWAC with 16 interceptions in 2022, including four returned for touchdowns. Isaiah Hamilton earned First Team All-SWAC honors and led the conference in interception returns for touchdowns. In 2023, TSU’s secondary ranked first in the SWAC in passing efficiency defense, and Garrigan played a key role in assembling the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history.

Garrigan brings 18 years of coaching experience and a proven record of success at multiple levels, including NFL exposure through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. During the fellowship, he worked with the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions, assisting with training camp operations and preseason game preparation while gaining hands-on experience with professional defensive backs and team systems. Over his career, he has developed 35 All-Conference players, nine All-Americans, and helped 33 athletes earn opportunities at professional camps. His teams have captured 11 championships, including nine conference titles and two national championships.

During his four-year tenure at UIW, Garrigan helped transform the program into a conference champion and playoff contender. The Cardinals captured two Southland Conference Championships and made two FCS Playoff appearances, including a historic 2021 season that featured the program’s first-ever win over an FBS opponent (Texas State) and a trip to the second round of the playoffs. That season, the defense led the conference in scoring defense, pass defense, and passing efficiency defense while producing multiple All-Southland defensive backs and ranking among the league leaders in interceptions and takeaways.

Garrigan’s defenses at UIW were defined by their ability to create turnovers and make game-changing plays. In 2019, the Cardinals led the nation in turnovers forced (33) and turnover margin, while ranking among national leaders in interceptions, fumble recoveries, and defensive touchdowns. His impact was immediate in 2018, engineering a dramatic turnaround from a 1–10 record to a conference championship and playoff berth, with the team setting program records in turnovers and interceptions and establishing one of the top takeaway defenses in the FCS.

Prior to UIW, Garrigan spent four seasons at Texas A&M-Commerce, where he coached one of the top secondaries in the nation and played a key role in the program’s 2017 national championship run. His defenses consistently ranked among national leaders, including an 11th-place finish in opponent passing efficiency, 15th in scoring defense (16.7 points per game), and ninth in interceptions during the championship season. Over four years, his secondary totaled 71 interceptions, 185 pass breakups, and 12 defensive touchdowns while producing 14 all-conference players, three all-region selections, a Lone Star Conference Defensive Back of the Year, and an All-American. His units led the conference in interceptions, takeaways, and passing efficiency defense multiple seasons, including a 2016 campaign where the defense recorded 38 takeaways (No. 1 in the nation) and seven defensive touchdowns (No. 2 nationally).

Garrigan also brings a strong playing background, beginning at Lackawanna College where he was a preseason All-American and earned team MVP honors in 2004. He then became a two-year starting defensive back at West Texas A&M, helping lead the program to back-to-back Lone Star Conference championships in 2005 and 2006 while compiling a 21–4 record during that span. Following his collegiate career, he played professionally for two seasons with the Alabama Vipers, contributing to a league championship team in 2008, and also had a stint in the Canadian Football League.

A native of Dale City, Va., Garrigan earned his associate's degree in business studies from Lackawanna College in 2005. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from West Texas A&M in 2009 and a master’s in sports administration from East Central University in 2013.
