The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team suffered a 107-26 loss to the No. 7 ranked Miami Hurricanes Thursday night at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
Miami applied pressure early and often to jump out to a 60-9 halftime lead, but despite the tough loss Prairie View A&M head coach Toyelle Wilson said there are a few things her young team can take and learn from the game.
"The first half wasn't a good example of how we are capable of playing," Wilson said. "We came out timid, and in the end the aggressor won the game."
The bright spot in the contest for Prairie View A&M was the play of sophomore guard Michaela Burton, who scored a career-high 14 points against the No. 7 team in the nation. Burton showed no signs of fear, firing from behind the three-point line at will and with accuracy. She went 4-for-5 from three-point land and finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field.
Wilson said she was impressed with Burton's intensity from the get-go.
"We knew she had that in her," Wilson said. "To me, it seemed like she was the only one that wasn't scared. She came out shooting and that's what she does."
The Lady Panthers dropped to 1-1 on the season and have a tough road ahead of them, as they are set to face Michigan, Marquette and Washington State at the Paradise Jam Tournament in the Virgin Islands from Nov. 24-26. Prairie View A&M will play one game each day during that span beginning at 4:45 p.m.
