BOX SCORE
The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team outscored Northwestern State by 14 points in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 24-point halftime deficit in a 79-69 loss at home Tuesday night.
The Lady Panthers trailed 51-27 at the half and had 11 turnovers. However, a highly effective full-court trap in the second half turned the tide for the Lady Panthers. They started the second half off on a 7-2 run, which was capped off by two free throws from freshman guard Jeanette Jackson with 16:39 left to cut Prairie View A&M's deficit to 53-34.
Northwestern State committed 21 second-half turnovers, and the Lady Panthers finished the game with 21 steals. Jackson, who recorded a game-high seven steals and added 15 points, was an integral part in a run that helped the Lady Panthers remain within striking distance in the final minutes.
She stole the ball from Lady Demons' guard Tashana Triplett and on the fast break hit freshman forward Larissa Scott for the layup. The transition basket cut Prairie View A&M's deficit to 73-62 with 2:10 left in the game.
Junior guard Latia Williams got the Lady Panthers to within nine points of Northwestern State with a free throw at the 1:04 mark in the second half. Prairie View A&M trailed 74-65 at that point, and nine points would be as close as the Lady Panthers could get.
Williams recorded her first double-double of the season, finishing with game and season-highs in points and rebounds with 18 and 11, respectively.
Jordi James led the Lady Demons in scoring with a 15-point performance, and Northwestern State had five players score in the double digits.
The Lady Panthers fell to 1-5 after the non-conference loss and will travel to Berkeley, Calif. to participate in the Cal Classic, which is slated for Dec. 3-4. Prairie View will face UNLV in its first game of the tournament at 2 p.m. on Saturday followed by California or Cal-State Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon at either 2:30 or 4:30 p.m.
