GAME TWO BOX SCORE
AUSTIN, Texas - The Prairie View A&M baseball team traveled up Highway 290 on Tuesday and captured a doubleheader sweep over Huston-Tillotson University by margins of 7-6 and 12-2.
In game one, Prairie View (19-15) used a two-run frame in extra innings which proved to be just enough as they won the opener 7-6.
HTU kept the Panthers on the edge of their seats throughout the game as they overcame an early three-run deficit with a pair of runs in the second and another score in the third for a 3-3 tie.
Tied at 3-all, both sides went scoreless until the top of the seventh as PV made their first attempt to close out their opposition as third baseman Sal Hernandez led the inning off with a single. Prairie View broke the tie on a wild pitch as Brandon Brooks, who replaced Hernandez as a pinch runner, used his blazing speed to create havoc on the basepaths. The Panthers didn't stop there as they added another run on Kyle Bible's sacrifice fly to center which led to Brandon Williams' run. However, the lead was brief as the Rams answered with two runs in the bottom frame to push the contest into extra innings.
In the eighth, PV used two hits and an error to seal the deal after rallying behind a two-out single from center fielder Colby Hines. Hines advanced to second base after a single from Hernandez and moved to third after a Ram error. With the bases loaded, the Panthers took advantage of poor pitching as Tillotson's Anthony Banda walked in consecutive runs en route to a 7-5 advantage.
The Rams wouldn't go away quietly though as they crossed home a run in the eighth to draw within a run. However, junior reliever Julio Baltodano struck out the final batter to end the game.
Anthony Neves earned the win in a relief performance while Julio Baltodano stepped in and picked up the save. Hernandez concluded the contest going 3-of-4 at the plate with an RBI while catcher James Rodriguez contributed a pair of RBIs after batting 2-of-4.
Game two played out in much different fashion as Prairie View controlled the contest from start to finish en route to a decisive 12-2 win.
The Panthers scored a pair of runs in both the second and third frames for an early 4-0 lead. The Rams scored once in the third but was forced to play an uphill battle the rest of the way as the Panthers combined to score eight runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Prairie View returns home for a three-game homestand as they prepare to take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff this weekend. The series opens up on Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
