Panthers Rally To Win Fifth Straight Labor Day Classic

Barrick Nails Game-Winning Field Goal

BOX SCORE

HOUSTON - Redshirt freshman Christopher Barrick nailed a 36-yard field goal with four seconds remaining as the Prairie View A&M Panthers rallied back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat TSU 37-34 before an overflow crowd at Delmar Stadium on Saturday night.

After a PV punt on the game's opening possession, TSU went ahead 7-0 as they marched 83 yards in 13 plays as quarterback Dantavious Parker rushed in for a 2-yard score.  On the following kickoff, the Panthers set the tone for special teams as senior running back Jermaine Waddy returned the kickoff 80 yards for his first career kickoff return.  Barrick's PAT was good as PV knotted the contest at 7-all.

Both teams traded punts after the return but TSU struck again to open the second quarter as running back Martin Gilbert scored from two yards out with 14:23 remaining.  PV continued to struggle offensively in the half as they were forced to punt twice in the quarter while TSU was on the verge of going up by three scores as they lined up for a 26-yard field goal attempt towards the end of the half.  However, the Panthers came up big on special teams once again as they blocked the field goal which led to an 85-yard return by redshirt freshman Jacquez Polk to the TSU 1.  PV running back Dwayne Stewart closed the gap to 14-13 as he scored from one yard out with 34 ticks left.  However, the Panthers suffered a special teams lapse on the PAT as the kick was blocked which kept them from knotting the game up as the half came to an end.

TSU's Richard Samuel opened the second half with a bang as he returned the kickoff 71 yards to the PV 19.  Four plays later, Gilbert rushed in from one yard out as PV's deficit grew to 20-13.  The score remained the same following the PAT as the attempt was missed.

With the offense still struggling, the Panther defense came up big in the quarter as they held TSU up at the goaline and forced another Tiger punt as the quarter approached the end.  With 2:32 remaining in the quarter, freshman running back Fred Anderson combined to rush for 15 yards on his first three carries.  Two plays later, freshman quarterback Jerry Lovelocke found junior wideout Deandre Cooper on a short pass which turned into a score as Cooper raced 28 yards down the field for his second score of the season.  Barrick's PAT was good as the game was tied at 20-all entering the fourth quarter.

TSU began the final quarter on a positive note as Parker connected with Samuel for a 26-yard strike with 14:04 left.  The PAT was good as TSU led 27-20.  PV was forced to punt on the ensuing possession and TSU kept the momentum going as they used a combination of running and passing to set up its next score.  Gilbert ran in from five yards out for his third touchdown of the night and the two-point conversion was good as the game was slipping away from PV en route to a 34-20 deficit.

Sensing the game slipping away coupled with the round of silence from the sea of Panther fans in the stands, the Panthers dug deep and rallied to get back into the contest as Lovelocke scored on a 30-yard touchdown with 7:36 remaining.  Barrick's PAT sailed through the uprights as PV trailed 34-27.

PV's defense forced TSU to punt following its next drive and the Panthers received a dose of good fortune as the punt only traveled seven yards.  A personal foul by TSU two plays later moved the ball to the TSU 37 and Lovelocke took advantage as he found freshman wideout Greg Thurmond for a 12-yard strike to the TSU 22.  Freshman Fred Anderson went to work during the next three plays as he combined to rush for 23 yards to move PV up to the TSU 12.  Two plays later, the Panthers were back into the game was Lovelocke connected with Thurmond for the duo's first-ever touchdown pass and reception.  Barrick nailed the crucial PAT and tied the game at 34-all with 2:13 left.

Barrick recorded a touchback on the ensuing kickoff and the PV defense played with renewed vigor as they forced TSU to a three-and-out.  The punt only sailed 12 yards on fourth down which gave PV outstanding field position with the game on the line.

After a one-yard rush on first down, Waddy broke free for an 11-yard scamper which moved the ball to the TSU 20.  Waddy rushed for two yards to the TSU 18 on the following play and PV attempted a shot at the end zone on 2nd-and-8 as Lovelocke tried to hit sophomore Jacobie King.  With the opportunity to run another play on third down, PV head coach Heishma Northern opted to go for the field goal instead and Barrick picked the perfect time to nail his first career field goal as his 36-yard kick sailed through the uprights for PV's first lead of the night.

Barrick nailed a touchback on the ensuing kickoff and TSU's desperation pass fell short as PV won its fifth straight Labor Day Classic along with marking the first head coaching win for Northern.

Prairie View A&M finished the game with 212 total offensive yards with Lovelocke rushing for 67 yards and passing for 72 yards.  Redshirt sophomore linebacker Chris Townsend led PV with 11.5 tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack.

The Panthers return to action next Saturday as they'll host Arkansas-Pine Bluff in its home opener at Blackshear Field beginning at 6 p.m.
