The Prairie View A&M women's tennis team lost to the visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Thursday afternoon in a 7-0 decision.
Early during the competition, the Lady Panthers nearly stole a match from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in doubles play. The team of
Raven Lewis and
Lerato Ndlovu pushed the Islanders No. 2 team of Stefania Nicolae and Mia Matuszak to the brink in a 9-7 match that took an extra set to decide.
Also in doubles, the No. 1 team of
Brittany Harrell and
Alejandra Barrera lost 8-4 to Mirna Cicak and Doris Kuselj of the Islanders.
As the competition came to an end,
Alexandria Young, at the No. 7 spot for Prairie View A&M in singles play, drew a crowd as she fought to stay alive in a match against Cassie Shaw from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. She recovered from a 6-1 defeat in the first set to find a groove and pressure Shaw in a 7-5 loss in the second set.
The Lady Panthers dropped to 0-2 on the season. They will travel to Abilene, Texas where they will face Texas A&M-Kingsville, Abilene Christian and Sam Houston State in a two-day tournament on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4.
