GAME NOTES
The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team has its sights set on a pair of wins in the Toledo Invite. A 7-3 Hampton team is its first target, and the Lady Panthers will face the Pirates at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in Savage Arena.
The Lady Panthers and Hampton have never played in the post season or the regular season. Prairie View A&M will look to its leading scorer and rebounder Latia Williams to set the tempo. Fellow senior guard Kiara Etienne (15.7 ppg) and sophomore center Larissa Scott (8.3 points and 8.6 rebounds) will provide other options, while Prairie View A&M looks to bounce back from a 72-60 loss by the hands of No. 21 ranked Kansas.
Containing Hampton's Kiara Avant will be part of the game plan, and finding a weakness in the Pirates' No. 10 ranked defense will also play a role in Prairie View A&M's success.
Friday's opponent for the Lady Panthers will be determined by a win or a loss in Thursday's game. Toledo (8-1) or Evansville (2-7) will await Prairie View A&M in the second round. Neither team has played Prairie View A&M in its program's history.
In the memory of the children and teachers lost in the Newtown, Conn. shooting, the Prairie View A&M athletes will wear green shoelaces while the coaches will wear green ribbons. Green and White are the school colors of Sandy Hook Elementary School, site of the unfortunate shooting.
