BOX SCORE
HOUSTON – Prairie View A&M fell victim to the error bug as TSU took advantage of five Panther errors for a 7-1 victory on Saturday night at Minute Maid Park in the MLB Urban Invitational.
TSU claimed an early 3-0 lead in the third and scored four additional runs over the final four innings of play. Prairie View A&M had its chances to get on the scoreboard throughout the contest but ran into an obstacle each time a scoring opportunity arose.
With two outs in the top of the second, sophomore Dominiq Harris hit a shot to left but had to settle for a single after suffering an injury down the first base line. Senior Darryl Johnson followed with a double to left but Harris pulled up again on the play which forced him to stop at third base. Stef Hernandez flied out on the ensuing at-bat to end the inning. In the fifth, Johnson hit a leadoff triple to center and made an attempt for the inside-the-park home run but was thrown out at home plate.
Prairie View A&M scored its first run of the 2012 campaign in the seventh as Sterling Smith tripled to center and scored on Johnson's sacrifice fly.
In the field, the Panthers didn't help themselves either with five errors that led to four runs.
Johnson finished 2-for-3 at the plate with the team's lone RBI. James Rodriguez followed with a pair of hits while starting pitcher Derrick Mitchell fell to 0-1 on the season after allowing five runs in six innings of action.
The Panthers will close out the MLB Urban Invitational Sunday afternoon back at Minute Maid against Grambling at 4 p.m. The contest was to be played at the MLB Urban Academy in Houston but was moved due to field conditions.
