Prairie View A&M swept Huston-Tillotson to improve its winning streak to four games, the longest of the season. The Panthers pulled off a seventh-inning rally in Game 1 to squeak by with a 6-5 victory and then survived a seventh-inning scare in Game 2 for a 4-2 win.

Panthers starter Cody Thompson showed signs of fatigue after 4 2/3 innings and surrendered three runs in the top of the fifth as the Rams took a 5-3 lead. Prairie View A&M head coach Waskyla Cullivan made the pitching change to DeLeon Boyd, who pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball and recorded four strikeouts to give the Panthers an opportunity to at least stay within striking distance. Boyd got his first win of the season.

In the bottom of the seventh, lead-off hitter Brett Valley and left fielder Darryl Johnson both singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. Brad Benes then performed what supposed to be a sacrifice bunt, but he out-ran the throw for the pitcher to the first base bag. To make matters worse, the Huston-Tillotson first baseman could not handle the low throw by Sampel and the ball got past him, zipping past the foul line to the fence in far right field. Both Johnson and Valley were able to score on the error, and Benes' hustle on the infield single changed the game, as he was able to advance all the way to third during all of the confusion.

Dominiq Harris put the Rams out of their misery on Prairie View A&M's next at bat. His walk-off single to right field drove in Benes, and the Panthers completed the comeback.

Cullivan was happy with the victory but not so much with how they were forced to win it in the late innings.

“We were able to pull two wins out against a very tough Huston-Tillotson team,” Cullivan said. “I think we were tired from yesterday's double-header so the intensity that I expected wasn't there. But we fought back like we've done in the past to get the win.”

Game 2 was highlighted by the pitching performance of Julio Baltodano, who pitched five shutout innings of four-hit baseball to pick up his first win of the season.  The Panthers headed into the seventh inning with a 4-0 lead. However, reliever Chuck Ater gave up a two-run homer to Lacy and walked the next batter before being pulled for Clayton Orsak with no outs and a runner on first. Orsak forced the next batter to ground out into a 6-4-3 double play, and then saved the game with a 1-3 groundout.

The Panthers improved to 9-7 (2-0 SWAC) and will head to Baton Rouge, La. to take on Southern in a three-game series, starting at noon and Saturday and finishing with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
