They remember that 3-4 loss to Jackson State on Feb. 25 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Roundup. It was their only loss of the SWAC season. It was a match that slipped away from them. It was a loss that has the Lady Panthers motivated to go undefeated in their four matches in Baton Rouge, La. from March 24-25 at the second SWAC Roundup.
The Prairie View A&M women's tennis team is 5-10 this season but still has one of the best records in the SWAC against conference opponents at 3-1. Though the Lady Panthers will not face Jackson State again in Baton Rouge, they still will be motivated to finish the conference regular season on a four-game win streak in order to secure a No. 1 seed in the SWAC Tournament on April, 20.
“I think if all of the girls step up at the same time we will be fine,” Prairie View A&M tennis coach
John Cochran said. “We've been talking about this a lot. In the (conference) match against Alabama A&M they all stepped up at the same time, and everybody won. They lost their concentration against Jackson State. We've got a great shot. We just have to play.”
The Lady Panthers' No. 1 singles player
Brittany Harrell leads the team with six wins and is 5-5 in Prairie View A&M's last 10 matches. She and doubles partner
Alejandra Barrera are 6-4 in their last 10 matches as a team and look to improve upon what they have established.
“I expect Brittany to lead us into battle,” Cochran said. “Brittany, Raven (Lewis) and Lerato (Ndlovu) are doing pretty well. We need all hands on deck though. Everybody is going to need to be playing at their best for us to be successful. They've got to practice hard and play together.”
The Lady Panthers' relative success in the SWAC Roundup will determine what where they end up in the SWAC Championships on April 20 in Alexandria, La. The Panthers kick off the SWAC Roundup against Alcorn State at 9 a.m. on March, 30 and will finish their fourth match in two days against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 2 p.m. on March 31 in Baton Rouge.
