IRONDALE, Ala. - The error bug bit the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers hard as Alabama A&M rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3 in the opening round of the 2012 SWAC Softball Tournament in Irondale, Ala.
Junior Brittanie Gardner started things off for the Lady Panthers with a solo homer over the left field wall for an early 1-0 lead in the third. Two batters later, freshman Olivia Pace walked and advanced to second on Leanna Flores' sacrifice bunt. Freshman Shontel Lopez singled and eventually scored along with Pace as freshman Alissa Navarro doubled to left center for an early 3-0 advantage.
With two outs in the fourth, a throwing error allowed Alabama A&M's Shaquille Morris to reach base which ultimately turned into a run as she rounded the bases to cut AAMU's deficit to 3-1. In the fifth, AAMU's Brianna Zeigler hit an RBI triple and eventually scored on Raven Grubbs' sacrifice bunt to knot the contest at 3-all.
PV's third error of the game allowed AAMU to put pressure on the Lady Panthers once again as runners were at second and third with one out in the sixth. Alabama A&M moved ahead 4-3 on the very next play via a sacrifice bunt and held on from that point as PV couldn't convert a pair of hits over the next two innings into the tying run.
Sophomore Cally Falls was tagged with the loss despite a two-hit, eight-strikeout performance. Junior Kelly Scruggs finished 2-for-3 while Navarro tallied two RBIs.
The Lady Panthers will face Grambling State at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Shea Brothers Softball Complex. The loser of the contest will be eliminated from the tourney while the winner will play the loser of Alabama A&M/Mississippi Valley on Saturday.
