Former Prairie View A&M guard Dominique Smith signed with The Athleticas San German in San German, Puerto Rico. Smith, who finished her career at Prairie View A&M with 1,381 points joins Gaati Werema, another high-profile former Lady Panther in Puerto Rico. Gaati was the leading scorer in the winning era of Cynthia Cooper-Dyke with 1,529 points, and she signed with Valencianas De Juncos.
“Gaati is going to Puerto Rico as well, and I'm excited for her because we've been playing together since high school back at Orlando Christian Prep,” Smith said. “We decided to go to college together and what we did in the SWAC speaks for itself. We just know how to win so it's going to be different being on opposite sides because we know each other so well.”
Smith and Werema won two SWAC Championships each while at Prairie View A&M. Werema won both of her championships under Cooper-Dyke, while Smith won one championship under Cooper-Dyke in 2009 and the second under Toyelle Wilson in 2011.
Smith spent one season in Europe before signing with Athleticas San German this August.
“I was in the Czech Republic last season, but every season there is so much great talent coming out,” Smith said. “So for another team to show interest is humbling. I love being a pro, and most of all I love representing PV because I'm always asked where I'm from.”
