Lady Panthers Dominate Grambling In Convincing Home Win

BOX SCORE

Prairie View A&M took advantage of a balanced performance by its entire team in a 78-59 win over Grambling State on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Panthers had four players score in the double digits and two players finish with season-highs in assists in the victory.

Prairie View A&M bounced back from a home-opening loss to Texas Southern by dominating Grambling State for two complete halves of Basketball. With sophomore point guard Jeanette Jackson running the show, the Lady Panthers offense moved like a well-oiled machine, scoring in the 70s for the first time since Nov. 25, 2012. They accrued 19 assists en route to the blowout victory. Jackson finished tied for a  season-high seven assists and added five points.

“We opened up the game better than we have been,” Prairie View A&M coach Toyelle Wilson said. “We worked hard this week on playing harder, being more aggressive, and executing.”

Etienne got off to a hot start for the Lady Panthers as she gave them an early lead, which her team was able to hold on to. She scored 13 first-half points and was a catalyst for the Lady Panthers in the second half.

Latia Williams recorded her third-consecutive double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She was three assists shy of recording her first career triple-double. Redshirt-freshman guard Gabrielle Scott scored 15 and added two assists and two steals in the win, making it her second game in a row with 15 or more points.

Etienne scored 22 points, draining four shots from downtown. It marked Eitenne's fourth game this season with 20 or more points. The Lady Panthers also held their own defensively. Prairie View A&M has the best defense in the SWAC, holding opponents to a league-low 59.7 points per game. Grambling was held to 59 points, and the Lady Panthers also forced Grambling into 17 turnovers.

“It was a team effort,” Wilson said. “We worked on defense, angles and team-help this week. It showed.”

Prairie View A&M improved to 5-0 against Grambling under the guidance of Coach Wilson. The team hasn't dropped a game to the Lady Tigers since Feb. 15, 2010.

On Monday, the Lady Panthers will play hosts to Jackson State at 5 p.m. in a game where fans are encouraged to wear gold to show their pride.
