The Lady Panthers imposed their will on Alabama State to pull away late in the second half en route to a 63-53 win Saturday afternoon in the William Nicks Building.
After an evenly-matched first half tied at 33, Prairie View A&M clamped down defensively to hold the Lady Hornets to 20 second-half points and 38 percent shooting from the field. Alabama State had 12 turnovers in the second half and 21 for the game as Prairie View A&M amassed 12 steals led by senior forward Latia Williams' four-steal night.
After missing the Lady Panthers' previous two games, Williams finished one-point shy of a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard LaReahn Washington turned in a game-high 13 points off of the bench, pushing the ball in transition and scoring four points off of fast break layups.
Junior guard Michaela Burton turned in a season-high 10 points. She got the start and provided an early lift for the Lady Panthers, going 2-for-3 from three-point territory to score six first-half points.
The back-and-forth game may have finished with a 10-point spread, but Prairie View A&M did not make its devastating run until the final minutes. Washington tied the game at 52-52 when she knocked down a free-throw with 7:34 remaining. From that point, the Lady Panthers limited Alabama State to 0-for-7 shooting from the field and forced seven turnovers as they closed the game out on a 10-1 run. Prairie View made its living off of Alabama State's mistakes, scoring 22 points off of turnovers.
It was a game that featured 12 lead changes and 10 ties before the final buzzer sounded. Prairie View A&M will finish its two-game home-stand at 5:30 p.m. on Monday in the William Nicks Building. The theme of the game will be Greek Night.
