Prairie View A&M looks to add to its win streak against Southwestern Athletic Conference opponents with a win against Southern at 5:30 p.m. in Baton Rouge, La. With a victory the Lady Panthers will have won eight-consecutive basketball games against SWAC teams dating back to the 2011-12 season.
Alcorn State was Prairie View A&M's first conference victim, the Lady Panthers took care of business on the road in a SWAC Tournament Championship game rematch, winning 64-50 in the conference-opener on Wednesday night. Senior forward/guard Latia Williams, the SWAC's leading scorer and second-leading rebounder scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed seven boards in the victory. Williams is averaging 14 points and 8.3 rebounds.
Sophomore center Larissa Scott scored eight points had six rebounds in the win, while senior slasher JaQuandria Williams added 12 points and three assists. Scott, averaging 7.3 points and 7.7 rebounds is the SWAC's third-leading rebounder and is in the Top 20 in points per game.
Prairie View A&M is 14-46 in the All-Time series against Southern and 2-28 on the road. Lady Panthers coach Toyelle Wilson has a 3-2 record against Southern and coach Sandy Pugh, and is 1-1 in Baton Rouge. Prairie View A&M won its last contest on the road 73-53 on March, 1 2012.
Senior guard Kiara Etienne went off for 22 points in that game to lead all scorers and Scott turned in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Panthers will look for that same success. Etienne is averaging 12.4 points this season as the SWAC's third-leading scorer.
The Lady Panthers return home for the home opener at 5 p.m. on Sunday to face heated rival Texas Southern and former Prairie View A&M coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke.
