The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers Volleyball team had an impressive performance in their first Southwestern Athletic Conference home game against Grambling State (1-3 SWAC), sweeping the Lady Tigers 3-0 on Thursday night in the William Nicks Building. 

It was an intense evening as the Panthers rallied back and forth with the Tigers, but the Panthers managed to take the edge over Grambling in each set the match. The Panthers out-hustled the Tigers picking up 23 digs for the night with 86 total attacks. Assistant coach Tacho Cloud said how important each conference match is if they plan on repeating as the SWAC West Champions for the fifth season in a row.

"(This win) was a little bit of motivation," Cloud said. "We have a goal to win first on our side."

Leading the charge for the Lady Panthers was junior outside hitter Candyce Alexander, finishing the night with 20 total attacks and 10 kills bringing her to a kill total of 149 this season. Three-time defending SWAC Newcomer of the Week Magda Zietek made an impact defensively with a team-high of four blocks against the Tigers' hitters.

Senior setter Kelsey Espinosa earned 33 assists, totaling more than the entire Grambling State lineup. Defensive specialist Paige Chuidian and libero LaKeisha Allen both registered six digs on the back row. 

Cloud looks forward to the upcoming games with and is determined to compete at a high level against tough opponents in the Houston Cougars and SWAC rival Texas Southern. 

"We've been playing tough teams all year, so that is nothing new," Cloud said. "We're excited to play them and keep our win streak going."

During homecoming week the Lady Panthers (2-2 SWAC) will host Houston at 7 p.m. on Oct. 15 in the William Nicks Building and Texas Southern will be played at the same time and at the same place on Oct. 17.
