BOX SCORE It may have been a 5-0 blowout victory for Prairie View A&M over Texas Southern, but Friday night's Southwestern Athletic Conference-opener will be a game that junior forward
Celene Batrez will be hard pressed to forget. Batrez performed a hat trick, scoring three-consecutive goals for the Lady Panthers as her team trampled Texas Southern at home.
Batrez doubled her goal total in one night, bringing her season tally to six. She also accounted for six of her 14 points on the season in her career-game against the Lady Tigers. For her first goal of the night, Batrez took a through pass from midfielder
Melissa Kalbfleisch and used a crossover dribble to race past the goalkeeper, who extended her coverage to the edge of the box. With nothing to stop her Batrez scored in the 28
th minute to give her team a 2-0 lead. Her goal came approximately one minute after forward
Angie Guillory kicked in her third goal of the season to put the Lady Panthers up 1-0.
In the 63
rd minute Guillory accounted for her third point of the match when she sailed a perfectly placed cross to Batrez, who put the ball in the back of the net off of a header. Then to complete the hat trick Batrez took a through pass from senior midfielder
Maria Sanchez, eventually finding herself in a one-on-one situation with Texas Southern keeper Rebecca Hajny again. Batrez beat Hajny off of the dribble and scored her third goal. Senior defender
Debbie Arguelles even got into the mix offensively on a night when everything seemed to be in her team's favor. In a scuffle inside of the box, Arguelles took a pass and scored her first goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper
Bianca Garza pitched a shutout in her first game back this season to start of 1-0. Garza, who won SWAC Goalie of the Week five times while starting for the Lady Panthers last season, was in rare form and didn't seem to have much rust. She had five saves, picking up were keeper
Dominique Dillon left off before suffering a season-ending injury.
Prairie View A&M improved to 1-0 in the SWAC while Texas Southern dropped to 0-2. The Lady Panthers have a week to recuperate before hosting Mississippi Valley State at 7 p.m. on Friday Nov. 18 on the soccer field.Â
