The Panthers bounced back from a three-loss weekend by taking down Texas College in a double-header with 2-1 and 4-1 victories at home on Tuesday. Crisp pitching was the theme of the day as Prairie View A&M only surrendered one earned run.
Starter Theodore Ater and reliever Deleon Boyd set the pace in Game 1. Ater pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up just one earned run off of seven hits, while Boyd picked up the win in 2/3 of an inning after a solid seventh.
The Panthers went into the seventh inning of Game 1 tied at 1-1. Greg Salcido scored in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a passed ball. Then in the third Texas College's Matt McEuen scored from third on a groundout by Jose Serna to the short stop. Ater held the Steers scoreless from that point. He was relieved by Boyd in the seventh, who retired his two batters faced.
In the bottom of the seventh the Panthers' Jeff Sealy started out on the right track with a double. Andre Oliver then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Sealy to third. Colby Hines was intentionally walked to get to Trey Price, and then he was thrown out trying to steal second. The Steers' gamble on Price didn't pay off. He hit a walk off single with two outs to win Game 1 for the Panthers.
Edward Robledo pitched a complete game in his first start for the Panthers. He threw seven innings, surrendering one unearned run off of just four hits and zero walks. He received plenty of run support by his teammates. Trailing 1-0, the Panthers scored a run in the second and then one in the third and then one in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.
Prairie View A&M put together a two-run fourth inning. Andre Oliver scored on a passed ball. Michael Pittman then picked up one of his three hits with a single to advance Hines, who walked, to second base. Pittman and Hines then executed a double steal to advance to second and third. Walter Wells then came through with a sacrifice RBI to give the Panthers an unsurmountable three-point lead.
Pittman went 3-for-3 in Game 2, while Brett Valley and Salcido both hit 1-for-2 with one run scored each. The Panthers will try to start their Southwestern Athletic Conference season off on the right foot with a three-game series starting Saturday at 1 p.m. and ending with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday at the Prairie View A&M Baseball Field.
