Lady Panthers Clobber Grambling State On The Road

GRAMBLING, La. - 
Prairie View A&M hit its shots and clamped down defensively in a dominating 83-49 win over Grambling State on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Panthers capitalized off of efficient ball movement and hot shooting from behind the arc to take a substantial lead early and put a stranglehold on GSU.

Prairie View A&M had its highest scoring output of the season in the victory and shot a season-high 51.7 percent from the field. That percentage included a 6-for-15 shooting performance (40 percent) from three-point territory. Ball movement and creation by sophomore point guard Jeanette Jackson fueled the Lady Panthers in spurts. She finished with 14 points and eight assists (season-high). She and senior guard Kiara Etienne were tied for the game-high to lead Prairie View A&M. 

Excluding Gabrielle Scott (eight points and three assists), each of the Lady Panthers' starters finished with double figures in scoring. Latia Williams picked up her seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Redshirt freshman forward Chelsea Azore had her best performance of the year, with a season-high eight points.

Defensively the Lady Panthers left Grambling State with little options but to take contested shots that did not fall. The Lady Tigers had 24 turnovers and shot 26.7 percent from the field. In the first half Grambing only shot 4-for-24 (16.7 percent) from the field, including 2-for-11 from downtown.  

The Lady Panthers shot 53 percent from the field in the first half, including 40 percent from downtown, en route to jumping out to a 25-point, 39-14 halftime lead over Grambling State. Etienne scored each of her 14 points in the first half, going 5-for-6 from the field, including 4-for-5 from downtown.

Joanna Miller, who entered the game as the SWAC's leading scorer and averaging 24.5 points in her previous two games, was rendered ineffective by Prairie View A&M's defense. She had seven points and committed eight turnovers on 2-for-8 shooting from the floor. 

Prairie View A&M improved to to 6-5 in the SWAC and 9-12 overall with their victory in Grambling, La. The Lady Panthers will cap off their road trip with a 5:30 p.m. game on Monday at Jackson State in Jackson, Miss.
