The Prairie View A&M baseball team needed a confidence boost after losing four contests in a row heading into Game 2 of Tuesday's double-header against Huston-Tillotson. Panthers senior third baseman
Brad Benes provided that with a walk-off, three-run home run to give Prairie View A&M a 4-3 win in dramatic fashion.
The Panthers'
Jeff Sealy led off the seventh inning with a single, but
Brenden Twomey struck out looking on the next at bat.
Brett Valley reached on a fielder's choice, but Sealy was thrown out on the force to second.
Colby Hines hit a single to shallow right field to put runners at the corners with two outs for Benes. He came through in the clutch with a walk-off homer to centerfield to snap the Panthers' losing streak. Benes combined to hit 5-for-6 with five RBIs and two runs scored.
Benes started the fourth inning with a leadoff double, and
Greg Salcido waked to put runners on first and second for Dominic Harris. Salcido and Benes executed a double-steal to put both runners in scoring position, and Harris sent a shot into the left field gap to score Benes from third and cut Prairie View A&M's deficit to 2-1. Later in the inning
Walter Wells walked to load the bases with one out for
Andre Oliver, he however struck out swinging.
Trey Price then flew out to centerfield to leave three runners stranded and two in scoring position.
Huston-Tillotson scored another run in the top of the seventh to extend its lead to 3-1.
Panthers starter
Chuck Ater got in and out trouble in the third inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Ater forced Huston-Tillotson outfielder Preston Castillo to ground out into a 6-4-3 double-play to preserve to keep his team's deficit at 1-0. Ater pitched three innings, surrendering just one earned run off of five hits.
Chadd Flick improved to 1-0 on the season after picking up the win. He threw four innings and had five strikeouts, giving up two earned runs.
The Panthers added on to a four-game losing streak after dropping Game 1 to Huston-Tillotson 10-5 in Tuesday's double-header. Redshirt freshman
Edward Robledo entered the game 3-0 and had the 4-2 lead going into the third inning. However, he was relieved in after pitching two complete innings due to an injury.
Sam Grant took on the pitching duties and gave up six runs (four earned) in 1.2 innings. The Rams piled on six runs in the fourth inning and capitalized off of uncharacteristic shaky defense. Prairie View A&M had three errors in that inning.
Brad Benes and
Walter Wells turned in monster games offensively for the Panthers, but their efforts weren't enough to avoid the defeat. Benes batted 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBIs. Wells was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
