The Panthers split Saturday's doubleheader with Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Panther Field. Prairie View A&M won Game 1 in convincing fashion at 6-0, and ended up losing a heartbreaker in 11 innings 5-3.
Prairie View A&M put together a four-run fifth inning to take control of the game and rode the efficient arm of starter Jonathan Mata (4-4) to pick up the the first win of the four-game weekend series.
Mata was outstanding as the Panthers fought to move up in the SWAC standings in preparation for the upcoming conference tournament. Mata threw a complete game, two-hit shut out. In nine innings he only allowed five runners to reach with just one walk and one hit batter.
The Panthers got some much needed offense with a timely hit by Trey Price. With Walter Wells on second base, Price sent the ball on a line right back at the pitcher into centerfield to drive in Wells to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the fifth. Brad Benes opened the flood gates later in the inning. With two outs and runners on first and second he hit a double to deep left field to score Andre Oliver and Brett Valley to give the Panthers a hefty 4-0 lead. Designated hitter Greg Salcido swapped places with him as Prairie View A&M went up 5-0.
Benes and Salcido were productive for the Panthers with their bats. Salcido batted 2-for-3 in Game 1 with two RBIs. Benes was 1-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs.
Game 2 did not start out as well for the Panthers. The Golden Lions were able to string together timely hits in the third and fourth innings to score three-consecutive and unanswered runs to take a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, with Valley on first base and no outs, Walter Wells hit a placed RBI single to deep right field to drive in Valley and cut his team's deficit to 3-1. Price struck out swinging on the next at bat, but Valley provided a ground ball RBI single to left field. Oliver then was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for Benes. However, he struck out swinging to leave a runner in scoring position stranded.
Prairie View A&M Game 2 starter Stef Hernandez threw eight innings, surrendering three runs (all earned) off of six hits with six strikeouts. AJ Helms came in for the Panthers and threw a hitless inning of relief to set the stage up for a ninth inning rally. Salcido led off the inning and flew out to center, but first baseman Dominiq Harris hit a single to right field and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Sealy came through with a game-tying single to drive in Harris, forcing UAPB to pull starter Mikey Ramirez for Redmond Floyd. However, the Panthers could not get the game-winning run across, sending the game into extra innings.
In the 11th with runners on second and third with two out, pinch hitter Jacob Whitney sent a line drive to centerfield, driving in two go-ahead runs for UAPB.
Prairie View A&M's record stands at 21-22 and 10-10 in the SWAC following Sunday's games. Arkansas-Pine Bluff improved to 19-27 (11-9 SWAC) after the Game 2 win. The Panthers will close out the weekend series on Sunday with a doubleheader set to begin at noon on Sunday at Panther Field.
