While some people may label it a quarterback controversy, the Prairie View A&M coaching staff refers to it as a quarterback luxury as the Panthers head into the season with two experienced signal callers in juniors Jerry Lovelocke and De'Auntre Smiley.
Last season, the duo combined to throw for 2,462 yards and 16 touchdowns as both saw plenty of action. On the ground, Smiley was also a threat as he rushed for 367 yards and three scores followed by two rushing touchdowns from Lovelocke. Both players have intangibles you can't teach which complement the team well.Â
"We're confident with either quarterback as the offense does not have to change much with either one of those guys playing," said head coach Heishma Northern. "We have some comfort as both guys have been in and able to put up a good numbers of points on the (score) board versus a variety of opponents and have been in contention for a number of awards."
Northern said each quarterback brings something different to the table when on the field and complements each other well on-and-off the field while splitting snaps.
"Jerry brings a little bit more of an accurate arm while Smiley brings a little bit more of athleticism from running the ball," said Northern. "Both of them can put the ball where we want them to and both have pretty good command of the offense. They understand that both of them may play so there's nothing personal between the two guys as one may start but one will play more snaps. They both understand the situation and they help each other on the field as they can both talk about what they see from opposing defenses. It's good for our team as they have confidence in both players."
The Panthers are in their fourth round of two-a-days on Monday and will practice once at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday before their final set of two-a-days on Wednesday.

When the Prairie View A&M Panthers hit the field for their 2013 opener versus Texas Southern on Aug. 31, one of the most noticeable changes will be the team's defensive scheme. Led by first-year defensive coordinator Charles McMillian, the Panther defense has been hard at work in picking up his scheme.
McMillian brings a wealth of experience to the defense with stints in the Big 12 (Texas A&M), Big Ten (Indiana), Mountain West (TCU) and Conference USA (Cincinnati). The Bryan, Texas native and Utah State graduate has his work cut out for him as the Panthers finished ninth in total defense, seventh in rush defense, ninth in scoring defense, 10th in pass defense and ninth in sacks last fall amongst SWAC teams.
"The main thing is getting the guys to understand base concepts as far as alignment splits, knowing where the receivers are located and knowing whether the quarterback is in the shotgun or underneath the center," he said. "Basically, it's getting them to understand the game and if you can get them to understand the game and those little things, we become a better team."
The Panthers completed their second round of two-a-days on Wednesday and held a single practice on Thursday morning. They'll conduct their third set of two-a-days on Friday with their first scrimmage of camp on Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
Season tickets are still available by calling (936) 261-9111 in addition to special hotel rates for selected games through the month of August.

MONDAY PHOTO GALLERY
The Prairie View A&M Panther football team began week two of training camp on Monday with its first round of two-a-days. With the additional hours gained, head coach Heishma Northern used the morning session to develop his team's depth which allowed the younger players to receive more repetitions.
"We gave some of our younger players a lot of reps against live action and we'll try to see what they can do as we did not scale anything back in what we call," said Northern. "We had an outstanding tempo at practice and got some good special teams work in."
The team will hold one practice on Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. before its second round of two-a-days on Wednesday beginning at 8:30 a.m.

2013 SCHEDULE (NOTE THE STATE FAIR CLASSIC TIME CHANGE ON OCT. 5)
The Panthers returned to the practice field on Thursday evening and had a spirited practice before cutting it a few minutes short due to the field lights turning off prematurely. Â Despite the darkness, several units stayed behind and worked on conditioning as the word 'finish' was barked out from several coaches.
One area that has been quite vocal this summer is the defensive unit. Â Led by new defensive coordinator Charles McMillian, the defense is learning a new scheme along with new terminology which makes practice quite interesting. McMillian, a former assistant at Texas A&M and TCU, has his work cut out for him as the Panthers struggled defensively last fall. Â The team finished ninth in total defense, seventh in rush defense, ninth in scoring defense, 10th in pass defense and ninth in sacks. Â
With a new scheme along with several coaching changes on defense, the Panthers have nowhere to go but up and if the team's defensive unit can match the production of the offense and overcome last year's mistakes, the Panthers have the potential for a strong season.

2013 SCHEDULE
The Prairie View A&M Panthers returned to the practice field on Wednesday night as head coach
Heishma Northern made it a point to stress ball security to the offensive unit while taking steps to ensure the Panthers cut down on mental mistakes.
The Panthers had an uncharasteristic 2012 season in holding on to the ball with a total of 25 fumbles, 15 of them which led to turnovers. In the air, the team's quarterbacks combined to throw 13 interceptions, two more than 2011.
"We have to make sure we don't put a lot of balls on the ground whether its receivers dropping passes, quarterbacks making bad throws or running backs fumbling exchanges with the quarterbacks," said Northern. "They have not done that in a while but I want to make sure we take care of the football and when we have a chance to make big plays, make those big plays. If we don't turn the ball over I think our offense can put up a good number of points on the board."
Wednesday's practice provided several glimpses of what Northern stressed as several interceptions were thrown during drills along with fumbled exchanges. The Panthers were only a minute away from knocking off eventual SWAC Champion Arkansas-Pine Bluff in their 2012 season finale but a fourth quarter fumble at the UAPB 4 left a sour taste in the team's mouth.
As a coach, you never stop harping on the small things because we always tell our guys mosquitoes and ants kill more people than elephants do," said Northern. "You have to keep talking about the small things that come back to bite you whether its having the ball in the outside arm or turning away from the linebacker your closest to when you catch the ball. Quarterbacks don't have to make long throws all the time, they can make a short pass and turn it into a long gain if it's an accurate throw."
The team returns to practice on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. as they'll begin its second straight practice in shoulder pads.
Season tickets are still available by calling (936) 261-9111 in addition to special hotel rates for selected games through the month of August.

With two days of training camp nearly in the books for the Prairie View A&M Panthers, three former Panthers who excelled at defensive end in Adrian Hamilton, Quinton Spears and Jarvis Reed are currently vying for roster spots on NFL teams. Â
