Bowling Finishes Second At SWAC West Round-Up

RESULTS

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Prairie View A&M bowling team opened SWAC play this past weekend with the annual SWAC West Round-up in Baton Rouge, La.  The Lady Panthers are in the thick of things as they finished second overall in their first match of the 2014 spring semester.

Prairie View A&M finished with an 8-4 mark and second in pinfall with a total count of 12,789 pins and second in average with a score of 913.5.

The Lady Panthers had a rough start to the round-up with a 2-2 mark on Friday as they dropped their first two matches to Alabama &M and Alabama State.  The team regrouped as the day went on and defeated Grambling State with ease followed by a 93-pin win over Texas Southern.

On Saturday, the Lady Panthers came out focused as sophomore co-captain Ashle Reid bowled a 223 and freshman Lynsie Rodriguez recorded a score of 205 to lead PVAMU to a win over Southern.  In their second match, sophomore Brittany Wehmeier bowled a 222 along with a 216 from freshman Alexis Borman to help the Lady Panthers defeat Jackson State.  Prairie View A&M avenged Friday's defeat to Alabama A&M as Borman bowled a 203 to lead the way before dropping its final match of the day to Alabama State.

PVAMU closed out the round-up with a 3-1 mark on Sunday as they defeated Grambling State, TSU and Southern while falling to Jackson State.  Against GSU, Borman had another solid game with a team-high 213 followed by a 212 from junior Alexis Holmes and a 203 from freshman Lynsie Rodriguez.  Wehmeier bowled a 236 against TSU for the team's third-highest score of the tourney.

"I'm fairly pleased with the performance of the team for the first round-up," said head coach Glenn White.  "Considering the status of the team at this time I think we did pretty well.  We are constantly progressing as a young team and I would expect that we will continue to get better as the season progresses. We had some good performances from several members on the team and I am particularly pleased with the performance of my two freshmen in Lynsie Rodriguez and Alexis Borman."

Reid had the highest individual game score for the Lady Panthers with a mark of 246.  Holmes followed with a 244 along with a 236 from Wehmeier.  Reid finished the round-up ranked fourth overall in total average (195.7) while Borman and Rodriguez finished 2-3 amongst freshman with averages of 183.4 and 182.3, respectively.

The Lady Panthers return to action next weekend for the third annual Prairie View A&M Invitational at The ITRC in Arlington, Texas.  The tourney begins on Friday and runs through Sunday afternoon.

In addition to tourney play, the Lady Panthers will also have a significant milestone as groundbreaking for the team's new bowling alley will be held on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 9 a.m.
