BOX SCORE The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers turned in their most balanced offensive performance of the season, leading to 71-68 win over Alcorn State on Monday night to improve to 1-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
The Lady Panthers had four players score in double figures for the first time this season and more importantly iced the game thanks to clutch free throw shooting in the final 13 seconds as interim head coach Dawn Brown picked up her first career win.
"It feels great to actually get your first win in front of your fans," Brown said. "This job hasn't been easy and it's a process. Getting my first win is the reward, but I credit this team. They have been playing extremely hard for me and I very proud of the them."
Trailing for the first nine minutes of the second half, Prairie View A&M turned to its role players to go on a 15-0 run to take control of the game. Freshman forward Alexus Parker started the party with a layup at 11:49 to give cut Alcorn State's lead to 46-41. About two minutes later redshirt sophomore guard Gabrielle Scott drained a three with 10:18 remaining to give the Lady Panthers their first lead of the second half at 48-46. Then following two huge layups by sophomore center Shamiya Brooks, Gabrielle Scott capped the run off with two free throws to give Prairie View A&M a 54-46 lead.
The Lady Panthers held their ground with a bend but don't break strategy, and they did not surrender their lead in the second half. Alcorn State gave the Prairie View A&M a scare with 13 seconds remaining when reserve center Ather Cep saw her first playing time of the game and threw up a prayer of a three. It dropped to tie the game at 68-68. Prairie View A&M, however, pulled away thanks to free throws and a clutch steal by senior guard LaReahn Washington.
"We just road the hot hand all night," Brown said. "We wanted to work the ball inside out and allow the defense to draw on Larissa (Scott) some and then kick out to the guards. We been in the gym working on our shots and adjusting our defense. It was time for a win. We have a lot of basketball left in us, so the best is yet to come with this team."
Junior point guard Jeanette Jackson was not the leading scorer for the Lady Panthers for just the fourth time this season, but her 15 points and season-high nine assists were critical in Prairie View A&M's win. Gabrielle Scott led the way with 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three-point territory for a team-high. Meanwhile, junior center Larissa Scott amassed her fourth-consecutive double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Larissa Scott got much-needed help in the post in the form of Brooks, who scored a career-high 11 points to complement five rebounds and three momentum-shifting blocks.
"It felt good to final have a group that could play well together," Brown said. "I knew we had to get the bench involved in order to secure this win tonight. Shamiya Brooks was key to our success. Her tenacity and physicality is what carried us over when we went cold from the arch."
Prairie View A&M will hit the road to take on Texas Southern in a rivalry game at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday as it tries to string together back-to-back wins for the first time under Browns direction.
