GRAMBLING, La. – Three matches into Southwestern Athletic Conference play, Prairie View A&M senior
Debbie Arguelles has put the rest of the league on notice as she lead the Lady Panthers to a 1-0 victory Friday at Grambling State.
Â
A senior defender Albuquerque, New Mexico, Arguelles showed that she is just as valuable to the Lady Panthers offense as she netted the match-winner in the 73rd minute to help Prairie View A&M (3-6-1) remain undefeated in SWAC play with a 2-1 league record.
Â
Despite outshooting the Lady Tigers 23-9 during the match, the Panthers were unable to break through until the latter stages of the second half. Arguelles' strike was an undersigned result off a set play after the Panthers were awarded a corner kick in the 72nd minute.
Melissa Kalbfleisch's kick found
Alicia Cooper for a 10-yard strike through traffic. Cooper's shot hit the left post, but found its way to Arguelles, who put it past Grambling goalkeeper Jennifer LeSage.
Â
For Arguelles, this week's SWAC Defender of the Week, it was her third goal in as many league contests.
Â
Grambling State (0-5-1) fell to 0-2-1 against SWAC competition.
Â
With the Lady Panthers controlling the pace of the match, goalkeeper
Bianca Garza faced few tests en route to her first shutout of the season. That said, the senior from Nederland, Texas still made nine saves.
Â
Garza and her defensive backfield of Arguelles,
Reina Mata, Breanna Cooper and
Nahuacalli Romo-Lara allowed very few real chances for the Lady Tigers.
Â
The Lady Panthers return to action Sunday when they travel to Arkansas to face the Lady Lions of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Lions (1-12) are 0-3 in SWAC play. Their lone win was against NAIA opponent Williams Baptist College.
Â
Match time between the Panthers and Lions is scheduled for 1 p.m.
