BOX SCORE LUBBOCK, Texas - Prairie View A&M's inaugural trip to the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship came to an early end as Texas Tech claimed an 8-0 decision on a chilly Friday evening.
The Lady Panthers played solid defense to open the contest as goalkeeper
Bianca Garza made several saves coupled with several Lady Panther defenders in position to keep Tech's attackers from penetrating the goalie box. However, the drought ended slightly before the 10-minute mark as Tech's Janine Beckie scored off a rebound for the 1-0 advantage. Two minutes later, Beckie recorded her second goal of the half as she moved around Garza for the 2-0 margin.
The deficit grew to 3-0 20 minutes in as Ashley Casey scored off a shot which initially hit the crossbar. Tech's fourth goal of the half arrived less than a minute later on a header by Beckie once again.
A 30-yard shot which was just out of Garza's reach paved the way for a 5-0 TTU lead to open the second half. Tech added three more goals over the next 15 minutes before switching to a conservative offense in order to run time off the clock.
Prairie View A&M finished with only two shots on goal as
Arianna Rountree was credited with both attempts late in the second half. Garza finished with nine saves as Tech outshot PVAMU 33-2.
Under the guidance of
Abe Garcia, this year's edition of the Lady Panthers will go down in history as the first team in PVAMU history to achieve an NCAA Tournament berth. Next year's squad will have an entirely different look as Garcia has to replace nearly half his roster due to graduation.
