Lady Panthers drop season-opener at Rice

HOUSTON, Texas – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers experienced a tough start to the 2014-15 season Friday, falling 70-58 at Rice.

Jasmine Goodwine scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Owls (1-0), while her teammate Shani Rainey added 21 points for Rice.

Senior guard Jeannette Jackson scored 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting for the Lady Panthers (0-1). Junior college transfer Chelsey Rosier also scored 11 points in her Prairie View A&M debut.

The Owls took control of the game during a two-and-a-half minute stretch midway through the first quarter as they used an 12-2 run to establish a 23-12 lead with 11:22 remaining before halftime. Rice was 6-of-6 from the field during that span, while Prairie View A&M went 1-for-6 and turned the ball over twice.

Goodwine was the catalyst to Rice building an early lead in the first half. The sophomore scored 18 points and was 7-of-11 from the field during the game's first 20 minutes.

The Lady Panthers would not let their hosts run away with the contest as they used a 6-0 run between the 6:19 and 4:35 marks to cut the Rice lead to 31-25. Alexus Parker knocked down a trey to ignite the run.

Rice was unable to gain any ground before the midgame break, as Rosier hit a 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining before halftime to reduce PVAMU's deficit to 37-31.

The Panthers would get as close as five points during the second half, but would get no closer. PVAMU was hampered by shooting 29 percent (23 of 79) from the field during the game. Meanwhile, the Owls shot 41 percent (24 of 58).

Friday's game marked the fourth consecutive year in which the Owls and Panthers have opened the season against each other. PVAMU last defeated the Owls in the 2011-12 season opener by a score of 61-58.

The Lady Panthers return to action Tuesday when they visit Stephen F. Austin. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
