Prairie View A&M picked up its first win of the 2014-15 season behind a solid defensive performance and a 17-point effort from
John Brisco as they claimed a 64-48 victory over Schreiner University on Wednesday night in the Baby Dome.
The Mountaineers hung tight to open the game as they led by as much as five early on en route to a total of six ties over the first 11 minutes. Â Trailing by three at 19-16 with 8:15 remaining, PVAMU guard
Jayrn Johnson scored three points the old-fashioned way to knot the game at 19-all. Â
After a Schreiner turnover on the following possession, Brisco took the game into his own hands and started a 12-0 run with three consecutive three-pointers for a 29-19 PVAMU lead. Â Schreiner's Steven Guerrero hit a jumper to slow PVAMU down but the Panthers upped their lead to 13 (34-21) following a pair of free throws by Johnson. Schreiner would narrow the gap to single digits on a Christian Pena layup with 43 seconds remaining but a free throw by Brisco with one second left sent the Panthers into the locker room ahead 36-26.
Prairie View A&M led comfortably for majority of the second half as they led by as much as 17 (50-33) after Brisco's three-pointer with 8:52 on the clock. Â Despite the double-digit margin, the Panthers couldn't shake the Mountaineers off as they threatened to make it a single digit contest by narrowing the gap to 11 points with as late as 1:18 remaining on the clock.
Despite a sluggish second half performance at times on the offensive end, the Panthers did a solid job defensively in preventing the Mountainers from making the contest a single digit affair as Schreiner was held to only 26.1 percent shooting from the field.
Brisco led four players in double figures with 17 points and two steals. Â Freshman
Zachary Hamilton finished with 12 points followed by 10 points apiece from
Karim York and
Reggis Onwukamuche. Â Onwukamuche capped off the night with a double-double as he also grabbed 12 Â rebounds along with a pair of blocks. Â Schreiner was led by forward Hollis Robinson's 11 points.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Texas State for a 4 p.m. tip-off in San Marcos, Texas.Â
