BOX SCORE
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team started its road trip on a positive note with its fourth straight win after defeating Alabama State 58-47 at the Acadome on Saturday afternoon behind a pair of 16-point performances from
Jeanette Jackson and
Alexus Parker.
The Lady Panthers wasted no time in setting the tone as reigning SWAC and College Sports Madness Players of the Week LaReahn Washington and Jackson combined to eight points for the early 8-0 lead. Defensively, it took ASU five minutes to score its first point as the Lady Panthers eventually pushed their lead to 10-1 as ASU was held to 0-for-9 shooting to open the game.
The Lady Panthers cooled off over the next four minutes as they misfired on their next four shot attempts. ASU began to heat up as they narrowed its gap to 10-7 with a 6-0 run but freshman Alexus Parker ended the drought with a basket for the 12-7 lead at the 10:56 mark. Parker's basket began another offensive surge for the Lady Panthers as Jackson nailed a trey followed by two free throws from Parker for 17-7 advantage with 7:50 remaining.
Alabama State continued to hang around as they closed to within 17-12 at the 6:16 mark but junior Shaneece Stephens took over offensively from that point with a pair of back-to-back jumpers to increase Prairie View A&M's margin to 21-14. After Stephens' effort, the Lady Panthers went cold over the next four minutes with an 0-for-3 performance from the field and a pair of turnovers which helped contribute to Alabama State narrowing its gap to 21-18. A well-timed three-pointer by Washington put PVAMU back on the scoreboard with 1:18 left as the lead increased to 24-18. Parker sent the Lady Panthers into the locker room on top 28-20 as the Savannah, Ga. native scored the final four points of the half for a 28-20 margin.
ASU's Jamesha Blake scored the first points of the half but once again, Parker was there to answer with a basket for a 30-22 lead. Blake scored once again to close within six but sophomore post Shamiya Brooks put an end to a three-minute scoreless binge with a three-point play the old-fashioned way off a putback for the 33-24 advantage at the 15:51 mark.
A trey by Jackson gave PVAMU its largest lead of the afternoon at 36-24 with 14:14 remaining but ASU's Kayla Tucker answered with a trey of her own to cut ASU's margin to single digits. However, Brooks responded with a vengeance once again with a putback to keep PVAMU ahead by double digits. After an ASU layup, Parker continued to lead the way as she scored four points during a 6-0 run to up PVAMU's lead to 15 (44-29) with 8:18 left in the contest. From that point, Prairie View A&M remained on cruise control until 2:09 left as ASU drew to within 50-41 after two free throws from Brittney Wright and 52-43 following Wright's layup 29 seconds later.
Jackson and Parker put the game away as they combined to hit six free throws over the final 1:19 as the Lady Panthers continued their recent stranglehold over ASU with their fifth straight win and 16th in 18 attempts dating back to 2007.
One area where the Lady Panthers executed well was their defensive performance on ASU center Quentori Alford. Alford entered Saturday's game as the SWAC's leading rebounder and top shot blocker with 2.2 per game. The Lady Panthers held her to only four points and two rebounds below her average.
"I have to give a job well done to Shamiya Brooks and Asha Hampton-Finch as they did a great job as far as containing her," said interim head coach Dawn Brown. "She earned a lot of her points at the free throw line so we did a good job defending on the inside."
Parker and Jackson both scored 16 points apiece with Parker also grabbing eight rebounds. Washington added nine points and six assists while Brooks pulled down nine rebounds and blocked two shots.
"Alexus' overall goal is to be freshman of the year in this conference and she will have to make a statement," said Brown. "Tonight, she came out and made a statement for sure."
The first half of SWAC play concludes on Monday night as the Lady Panthers will face Alabama A&M in Huntsville, Ala. at 5 p.m.
