DENTON, Texas – Prairie View A&M closed out day two of tournament play highlighted by a heartbreaking loss to Sam Houston State before closing out the day with a 6-0 loss to Texas State.
Needing only three outs to defeat Sam Houston State, the Lady Panthers surrendered 11 runs in the seventh en route to a 16-6 loss.
Sam Houston State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second and held it until the third as Alexandra Losoya's RBI double scored Lexus Walker. The Lady Bearkats tacked on another run in the fourth for a 5-1 lead but the Lady Panthers battled back with a five-run sixth to claim a 6-5 lead.
During the inning, Leanna Flores drew a leadoff walk followed by Brenecia Woods' bunt single. Junior Shontel Lopez recorded a two-RBI double to center for a 5-3 deficit which triggered a SHSU pitching change. The change didn't matter as PVAMU kept swinging as Rachel Rodriguez singled up the middle. SHSU forced a strikeout for the game's second out but Monica Cartwright hit her first career homer as a Lady Panther as her three-run shot gave PVAMU a 6-5 advantage.
In the seventh, SHSU drew a leadoff walk and tied the contest at 6-all after a PVAMU fielding error. The Lady Panthers went to their bullpen for a pitching change but it didn't stop the bleeding as a wild pitch and walk led to a two-RBI double and 11 unanswered runs for the inning as PVAMU didn't score in the bottom frame.
Brittanie Gardner picked up the loss in relief as the senior fell to 0-1 on the season. Lopez and Losoya led the team with two hits each with Cartwright leading the way with three RBIs.
In game two, the Lady Panthers were held to only three hits as Texas State claimed a 6-0 victory.
The error bug haunted PVAMU in the second as a fielding error led to a two-run Texas State homer. Texas State tackled on another run in the inning to extend its lead to 3-0 followed by another in the third for a 4-0 margin. PVAMU struggled offensively as Texas State forced them to strike out 15 times on the afternoon. The Lady Bobcats put the game away in the fifth with their second two-run homer of the day for the game's final margin.
Brenecia Woods was the only offense for PVAMU with a 3-for-3 performance while Cartwright fell to 0-2 on the mound.
The tourney concludes on Sunday as PVAMU will face Abilene Christian at 2 p.m.
