SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Prairie View A&M softball team finally returned to the diamond after a two-week hiatus and picked up a doubleheader road split over Incarnate Word on Friday afternoon. PVAMU claimed the opener 8-4 before dropping game two 9-3.
In game one, Prairie View A&M broke open a deadlocked contest with five runs in the middle innings to claim its first win of the 2014 season by an 8-4 margin.
The Lady Panthers jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning as Peyton Simms drew a leadoff walk and was driven in by Brenicia Woods' RBI single for the 1-0 lead. A throwing error by UIW allowed Woods to score for the early 2-0 advantage. The lead was brief though as UIW drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom frame for its first run and knotted the game at 2-all on Mia Esposito's RBi single.
Leanna Flores opened the third with a leadoff single but was called out on Woods' fielder's choice during the next at-bat. Woods stole second and third and moved PVAMU ahead 3-2 after scoring on a wild pitch. PVAMU broke the game open in the fourth as Katelyn Den Beste recorded a one-out single which was followed by Lexus Walker's two-run homer for the 5-2 lead. Back-to-back singles by Simms and Woods led to a UIW pitching change but the change didn't affect the Lady Panthers as Woods picked up another stolen base before scoring along with Simms on Alisa Navarro's two-RBI single for the 7-2 lead.
Relief pitcher Monica Cartwright, who was inserted into the game during the third, cruised over the next three innings as UIW scattered two hits during that span. PVAMU added its final run in the seventh as Woods opened the frame with a single and was driven home by Navarro's RBI single. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, UIW hit a two-run homer but that would end the scoring as PVAMU regrouped to seal the win.
Woods finished 3-for-4 with four runs, four stolen bases and an RBI followed by a 2-for-4, three-RBI outing from Navarro. Walker drove in two RBIs with a run scored along with two runs by Simms. Cartwright picked up her first career win at PVAMU as she struck out two in a relief outing.
The bats weren't as hot in game two as Incarnate Word scored seven runs during a three-inning span to win the rubber match by a 9-3 advantage.
UIW opened the contest with a first inning run followed by a bases loaded walk in the second for the early 2-0 lead. PVAMU trimmed its deficit to 2-1 in the fourth on Alexandra Losoya's RBI which scored Navarro but the Cardinals began a scoring surge in the fourth with four runs in the inning followed by three runs over the next three innings to pull away.
Six players had one hit each for the Lady Panthers with Navarro drawing two walks. Samantha Arciba and Losoya recorded an RBI apiece while Cally Falls fell to 0-3 on the mound.
PVAMU is scheduled to face Abilene Christian in a pair of doubleheaders next week as the teams will play twice on Tuesday and Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Prairie View, Texas.
