In what could be described as a storybook ending, Prairie View A&M opened its newly renovated baseball stadium in style as they overcame a six-run deficit en route to claiming a 9-8 win over Houston Baptist Tuesday afternoon.

Things didn't start off on the right foot for the Panthers as HBU went ahead 3-0 behind a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly in the first frame.  Four innings later in the fifth, the Huskies upped their margin to 6-0 after consecutive RBIs.

The Panthers opened the bottom of the fifth with a bang as Grant Dougherty hit a leadoff double followed by Walter Wells' single.  Robert Cossey loaded the bases with an infield single and the first PVAMU run was scored in the fifth as Cody Den Beste was hit by a pitch with one out.  Jeff Sealy followed with an RBI single and Dominiq Harris added the icing on the cake with a three-run shot over the left field fence for a 6-5 margin.

With the Panthers clicking offensively, the defense began to come alive as freshman reliever Michael Dewey held HBU at bay in the sixth.  PVAMU continued to sizzle at the plate in the bottom of the sixth as Christian Krushall led the inning off with a single followed by Dougherty's walk.  A wild pitch moved Dougherty over the second which proved to be big as he beat out the throw to tie the game at 6-all on Colby Hines' RBI single.  HBU was forced to use its bullpen once again after Hines' RBI and the Panthers came up big as Den Beste's three-run homer gave the Panthers a 9-6 advantage and forced HBU to insert its fourth pitcher of the afternoon following the homer.

From there, the Panthers shifted roles and displayed a defensive mentality as HBU went scoreless over the next two innings.  With two outs in the ninth, HBU put a scare in the Panthers with a homer, walk and RBI double to trim its deficit to 9-8.  However, Dewey overcame the brief scare and forced a game-ending strikeout for his second win of the year.

Dewey picked up the win in relief as he recorded two strikeouts over the final five innings.  Cossey, Dougherty, Harris and Greg Salcido finished with two hits each while Den Beste recorded four RBIs followed by three from Harris.

The Panthers return to action this Saturday with a home match-up versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff beginning at noon.
