BOX SCORE 2 Prairie View A&M dropped an emotional midweek home doubleheader to Incarnate Word by margins of 10-4 and 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon at the PVAMU Softball Complex.
Incarnate Word held off a pair of Prairie View A&M rallies en route to a 10-4 win the opener.
UIW scored three times in the first as PVAMU left two runners on in the bottom frame. After three scoreless innings, the Cardinals went ahead 7-0 as they were fueled by a pair of home runs. PVAMU drew to within 7-4 in the fifth as Alisa Navarro hit a two-run homer followed by RBIs from Rachel Rodriguez and Brenicia Woods. UIW added three more runs over the next two innings to claim a 10-4 lead and held off a last-inning rally by Prairie View A&M as the Lady Panthers loaded the bases with no out but came up empty.
Woods led PVAMU with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate which included an RBI and a run scored. Jazmine Hicks and Rodriguez both followed with a pair of hits while Navarro added two RBIs.
Incarnate Word overcame a two-run deficit in the top of seventh as they snatched the jaws of victory from Prairie View A&M in the finale by a 5-4 margin.
The Cardinals scored twice in the first and once again put an end to another PVAMU rally in the second as the Lady Panthers left two runners stranded in scoring position. The Lady Panthers tied the contest at 2-all in the third as Brittanie Gardner and Woods led the inning off with singles. Alisa Navarro bunted both players over which set up Shontel Lopez's two-RBI single.
In the fifth, Gardner used her speed for an infield single and was rewarded for her efforts as Woods hit a two-run shot over the left field fence for a 4-2 lead. The Lady Panthers loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth but came up short as no runs crossed home. In the seventh, the Lady Panthers ran into trouble as UIW loaded the bases and closed to within 4-3 on a sacrifice fly before reclaiming a 5-4 lead on Kristin Hebert's two-RBI double.
PVAMU had one final chance to tie or win the game in the bottom of the seventh but went down in order.
Woods and Gardner both finished 3-for-4 at the plate with Lopez and Woods accounting for a pair of RBIs each.
The Lady Panthers return home on Friday afternoon as they'll face Grambling State at 3 p.m.
