BOX SCORE 2 Prairie View A&M dedicated the renovated John W. Tankersley Field in style with a doubleheader sweep over Texas Southern on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers claimed the opener 9-0 while rallying for a 7-4 win in game two.
Jonathan Mata pitched a three-hit shutout and received plenty of offensive support as the Panthers won the opener by a 9-0 margin.
Jeff Sealy homered in the second for the early 1-0 margin followed by a two-run homer from Robert Cossey in the third which ultimately led to the removal of TSU starter Darius McClelland prior to the beginning of the fourth. The pitching change did little to stop the Panther offense in the fourth as Sealy recorded an RBI single followed by Dominiq Harris' sacrifice fly for the 6-0 lead. In the sixth, the Panthers put the icing on the cake as Greg Salcido hit a two-RBI double along with Cossey's second two-run homer of the afternoon.
Cossey finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs while Salcido and Sealy added two hits each. Mata went the distance as he struck out six.
Colby Hines' go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth combined with a solid relief performance from Jordan Stewart lifted the Panthers to a 7-4 win in game two.
The Panthers jumped on TSU early as Cossey continued his hot streak with a two-RBI double and a score via a wild pitch for a 3-0 first inning lead. Two innings later in the third, TSU crossed home four runs for its first lead of the afternoon as the Panthers went quiet over the next few innings. In the sixth, Salcido led off the inning with a double but was out on the next play following Cossey's fielder's choice. A passed ball moved Cossey to second which paved the way for Hines' two-run homer for the 5-4 lead.
The Panthers added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth as both Harris and Sealy hit RBI doubles, respectively.
Stewart came on in relief and pitched 5.1 innings of one-hit ball with six strikeouts. Cossey once again had a strong game with a 2-for-4 outing with three runs and two RBIs while Hines and Walter Wells both finished 2-for-4.
The series concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday as a win by Prairie View A&M would even the season series.
