Lady Panthers salvage 2-2 tie with Alabama A&M

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers held a statistical edge over their visitors from Alabama A&M in every offensive category Sunday, but it was the Lady Bulldogs who left the field triumphantly as the teams played to a 2-2 draw.

After opening Southwestern Athletic Conference play with a 5-1 win over Alabama State, the Lady Panthers continued their downhill play in their opposition's half of the field, but goals were scarcer as Alabama A&M goalkeeper Marissa Oehler made 13 saves.

Prairie View A&M (2-6-1) remained undefeated in the SWAC conference standings after two matches, but fell out of a first-place tie with Howard and Southern, which both have a full six points after the opening weekend of league play.

Alabama A&M (0-8-3) left the Lone Star state still seeking its first victory, though the Lady Bulldogs did take points from each of their matches in the Houston area after also drawing at Texas Southern on Friday.

Following a scoreless first half, PVAMU's Celene Batrez entered as a substitute after halftime, and her entry paid off almost immediately after she put home a short strike in the 53rd minute for her team-leading third goal of the season off a pass from Breanna Powell.

Though the Lady Panthers launched a fusillade of shots during the second half (PVAMU outshot Alabama A&M 17-6 in the second half and 31-7 for the match), they were unable to create sizable margin over their opponents. In the 67th minute, the Bulldogs capitalized on a long free kick that found Fatmata Mansaray open in the goal area with plenty of space. The native of Sierra Leone then put a shot past PVAMU goalkeeper Bianca Garza to level the score at 1-1.

The Bulldogs came close to stealing a win from their hosts when Jordan Stubblefield capitalized on a rebound in the 88th minute to give Alabama A&M a 2-1 lead. Undeterred, the Panthers wasted no time after the kickoff and less than a minute later, Powell netted her second helper when she sent a well-placed cross in the goal box that found Deborah Arguelles for a five-yard strike to level the score once again.

Prairie View A&M's best chance in the overtime sessions came in two minutes into the second extra frame, when the visitors were whistled for taking down Powell inside the penalty area. Powell opted to take the ensuing penalty kick, but the PVAMU celebration was cut short when Oehler stopped the initial shot and another shot off the rebound.

The Lady Panthers return to action Friday when they visit Grambling to face the Lady Tigers. They will then head to Arkansas-Pine Bluff for a Sunday meeting with the Golden Lions.

The trip marks the first two of four consecutive road matches for Prairie View A&M, which will play its next home game Friday, Oct. 17 against Howard University. Howard is one of only three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schools that field women's soccer, and became an affiliate member of the SWAC for the sport of women's soccer in time for the 2014 season.
