Prairie View A&M picked up its first SWAC win of the season and first four-game winning streak over Jackson State in series history as four players scored in double figures for a 70-55 home win over the Tigers on Saturday night.
The Panthers played solid on both ends of the court to open the contest as they relied on a team effort to establish several early leads in the first half. Ahead 9-6 with 13:40 remaining, three different Panthers scored en route to a 7-1 run which also saw JSU commit two turnovers.
Holding a 16-7 advantage but struggling to keep the team from early foul trouble, head coach Byron Rimm II relied heavily on his bench early on to contain Jackson State from establishing its inside game, mainly led by sophomore post Treshawn Bolden. JSU managed to cut the deficit to 19-15 with 8:08 remaining but Jacoby Green hit a big trey to give the Panthers a seven-point cushion. JSU would draw as close as five on two occasions from that point but the Panthers turned it up a notch with an 11-1 run towards the close of the half. During the run, the Panthers relied heavily on their backcourt as they received quality minutes and production from Avery Lomax, Green, Jaryn Johnson, Montrael Scott and Tre Hagood as the lead grew to as much as 16 (36-20) after two free throws by Johnson with 2:07 remaining.
JSU's Derrell Taylor scored the final three points of the half as the Panthers claimed a 36-23 margin entering halftime.
A layup by junior post Wesley Afolayan gave the Panthers their largest lead of the game at that point as his basket increased the margin to 48-29 at the 16:43 mark of the second half. However, the Panthers would slow as three straight turnovers over the next few minutes led to a 7-0 JSU run and a 12-point lead (48-36) after Taylor's layup.
Hagood stopped the bleeding with a much-needed running layup at the 13:05 mark and a free throw by Zach Hamilton coupled with a trey by Lomax with the shot clock ticking down upped the advantage back to 18 at 54-36 with 11:40 left. But once again, the Tigers would respond and answer with six straight points as another basket by Taylor led to a PVAMU timeout after the lead shrunk to 54-42.Â
Jackson State kept hanging around as they cut its deficit to 10 on three occasions but once again Hagood came to the rescue and injected a dose of scoring to keep JSU at bay coupled with a huge trey by Scott in front of the PVAMU bench at the 5:34 mark to make it a 14-point (61-47) PVAMU advantage.
After Scott's trey, the Panthers regained control of the game with their zone defense and shut down JSU's offense in the final minutes as they earned their first four-game winning streak over JSU in series history.
Scott led the Panthers with 15 points while Johnson added 11 points. Green and Hagood chipped in with 10 apiece with Hagood dishing out eight assists and tying for the team lead in rebounding with four.
The Panthers return to action on Monday night as they'll battle Grambling State at 7:30 p.m. in the Baby Dome. The game will be streamed live on SWAC-TV which can be accessed from www.SWAC.org.
