Lady Panthers aim for 10th consecutive win over Grambling State

Four-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Prairie View A&M concludes its three-game homestand Monday when the Lady Panthers host Grambling State. Both the women's and men's games between the two teams will be shown on the SWAC Digital Network.

The Lady Panthers (5-11, 2-2 SWAC) are looking for their third consecutive conference win after dropping a pair of contests at Southern and Alcorn State to start league play. Grambling State enters Monday's contest with a record of 5-11, and a 2-3 record in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Lady Tigers are searching for their first victory on the road, while Prairie View A&M seeks its 21st victory over Grambling State in its last 22 tries.

Last time out …
  • The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers evened their conference record to 2-2 with a convincing 82-65 win over Jackson State on Saturday. The Lady Panthers went to the free throw line 42 times in the game and sank 34 of their chances, good for a free throw percentage of .810.
  • Jeanette Jackson scored 22 points and grabbed four rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers. She did most of her work from the free throw line, sinking 15 out of 17 charity shots.
  • Shamiya Brooks posted her second consecutive double-double, scoring 10 points and posting 10 rebounds. She also blocked five shots, which matched her season and career high.
  • Asha Hampton-Finch tallied season highs of 10 points and four steals. Lamaria Cole scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. Her five rebounds marked a career high, including her two seasons at Kansas.
  • Jackson State lost its third consecutive conference game after starting league play 2-0.
    
Strength of schedule
  • Prairie View A&M's non-conference schedule featured four games against teams that were ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 Division I Women's Basketball poll at the start of the season. The Lady Panthers conluded their non-conference schedule at then-No. 6 Baylor on Dec. 29.
  • All four ranked teams the Lady Panthers faced this season are currently ranked 13th or higher in both the AP and USA Today/Coaches poll. The four teams were ranked 11th or better at the time they faced Prairie View A&M.
  • The Lady Panthers faced three of those teams in a stretch of four games – a 59-41 loss at then-No. 7 Texas A&M on Nov. 24 and losses to North Carolina and Stanford in Honolulu, Hawaii, over Thanksgiving weekend. The Tar Heels and Cardinals were ranked No. 11 and No. 5, respectively, when they faced PVAMU.

  • Jeanette Jackson and Chelsey Rosier have proven themselves to be threats behind the 3-point arc, as both players rank in the SWAC's Top 10 in terms of 3-point percentage.
  • The duo is responsible for Prairie View A&M ranking fourth as a team in the SWAC in 3-point percentage (26.1 percent, 69 of 264). The Lady Panthers have taken more 3-point attempts than any other team in the conference other than Grambling State.
  • Rosier's 3-point percentage of 34.5 (20 of 58) leads the SWAC. The junior guard from Tallahassee, Fla., averages 5.3 points per contest.
  • Jackson ranks eighth in the conference, having 29.9 percent of her long-range shots. She has made a league best 29 triples this season.

  • Senior guard Jeanette Jackson commands attention game in and game out. The 5-foot-8-inch guard from Las Vegas, Nev. is ranked in the SWAC's top 10 in seven statistical categories. A preseason All-SWAC First Team selection, Jackson currently leads the conference in scoring (17.2 ppg) and assists (3.9 apg).
  • Jackson has made more 3-pointers than anyone else in the conference, having made 29 out of 97 attempts. Her average of 1.8 triples per game also tops the conference.
  • She is also reliable from the free throw line, making, 76.8 percent (96 of 125) of her charity shots, good for fifth in the conference. Her 96 made free throws and 125 attempts are also league highs.
  • Her 15-of-17 showing at the free throw line Saturday was one short of her career best for free throws made in a game.
  • Jackson ranks second in the conference in both minutes played (35.4) and assist-to-turnover ratio (0.9).

  • Junior center Shamiya Brooks has proven to be a good teammate to have in the paint. Brooks has grabbed 61 of her 111 rebounds off the offensive board, giving her a SWAC-leading 4.1 offensive rebounds per game. 
  • The offensive rebounds have yielded some easy baskets for Brooks, as she ranks second on the Prairie View A&M team – and leads all starters – in shooting percentage (47.4 percent, 45 of 95).
  • Brooks has posted Prairie View A&M's first two double-doubles of the season in her last two games, averaging 12.5 points and 11.0 rebounds.

  • Shamiya Brooks has averaged 9.3 points and pulled in 8.0 rebounds per game in Prairie View A&M's four conference games this season. All of her points came in three games - 12 points at Southern, a 15-point, 12-rebound performance against Texas Southern, and a 10-point, 10-rebound showing against Jackson State.  Brooks has also blocked 10 shots (2.5 bpg) in Prairie View A&M's four conference games.
  • Meanwhile, PVAMU senior post Asha Hampton-Finch has also been a solid contributor inside, averaging 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per conference game. She has averaged 4.2 rebounds per game for the season, and scored a season-high 10 points in Saturday's win over Jackson State.
  • Alexus Parker has done more than be active on the perimeter. The 5-foot-10-inch guard has averaged 9.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in conference play.

  • The Lady Panthers are undefeated in their three home games this season. They have defeated their guests by an average of 23.7 points per game.
  • Prairie View A&M is shooting 44 percent from the floor at home, while opponents only shoot 32.8 percent.
  • Junior center Shamiya Brooks is averaging a double-double at home, with tallies of of 11.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per contest. She has posted back-to-back double-doubles.
  • Chelsey Rosier has averaged 8.0 points per game at home, and shot 46.2 percent (6 of 13) from 3-point range.
    
Tigers, Tigers, and Tigers, oh my!
  • The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers are in the midst of a three-game homestand - all against the SWAC's Tiger mascots. Saturday, the Lady Panthers defeated Jackson State 82-65, and conclude the stretch with Monday's game against the Lady Tigers of Grambling State.
  • Grambling State is 5-11 on the season and bring a 2-3 SWAC record into Monday's game. Grambling's Lady Tigers of fell 74-33 at Texas Southern on Saturday, which snapped a two-game winning streak.
  • The Lady Tigers have yet to win on the road this season, as all five of their wins were on their home court in Grambling, La. They are undefeated at home.
  • Yosha Watson leads the Lady Tigers in scoring with an average of 11.9 points per game, which also ranks ninth in the SWAC. The junior guard from Lake Charles, La., is the only player averaging in double-figures for Grambling State.
  • Watson has also been fairly reliable from long range; she has made 35.5 percent of her 3-point attempts (11 of 31).
  • Grambling State ranks eighth out of 10 teams in the SWAC in both scoring (53.1 points per game) and scoring defense (69.6 points per game allowed).
  • The Lady Tigers are last in the SWAC in rebounding (29.6 per game), rebounds given up (48.3), and rebounding margin (18.7).
  • Grambling State tops the league in steals, grabbing 11.4 per game.

  • The Lady Panthers have faced Grambling State 77 times since the start of the championship era in NCAA women's basketball. The Lady Tigers have a 54-23 record over Prairie View A&M in those games.
  • The Lady Panthers' .299 winning percentage against Grambling State is the fourth-lowest against Southwestern Athletic Conference opponent.
  • Though Grambling State has won the majority of meetings in the NCAA era, the Lady Panthers have dominated over the last 10 seasons, winning 20 of the past 21 meetings against the Lady Tigers.
  • Prairie View A&M has won the last nine meetings between the two teams, with the Lady Tigers' last victory occurring Feb. 10, 2010, when Grambling State won 68-65 in Prairie View.
