Panthers Drop SWAC Opener To Southern 68-56

BATON ROUGE, La. - A big second half run by Southern was the difference as Prairie View A&M dropped its 2015 SWAC opener by a 68-56 margin on Saturday evening inside the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

Southern controlled the contest early in the first half with a pair of six-point leads up until the 10:25 mark.  The Panthers came alive offensively with an 8-1 run as John Brisco and Karim York nailed three-pointers in addition to a Reggis Onwukamuche dunk en route to a 20-19 advantage with 7:57 remaining.  Southern would regain the lead and extend it to 25-21 after Trelun Banks' three-pointer but the Panthers closed out the first half on a strong note as they outscored the Jaguars 11-2 for a 32-27 halftime advantage.

Both teams opened the second half jockeying for position as there were three lead changes and three ties in the first nine minutes.  With the contest tied at 41-all with 11:12 remaining, the tide of the game turned in Southern's favor as the Jaguars outscored PVAMU 15-3 over the next seven minutes as PVAMU fell behind 56-44.  During the stretch, the Panthers shot 1-for-10 from the field while committing three turnovers compared to a 5-for-6 outing by the Jaguars.

Junior guard Jacoby Green scored four of the next six points for the Panthers as they closed the gap to 57-50 with 1:16 remaining.  However, SU was solid from the free throw line as they shot 10-of-14 from the free throw line over the final minute en route to the win.

Both Tre Hagood and Brisco led PVAMU with 13 points apiece with Hagood also accounting for five rebounds and seven assists.

The road trip comes to an end on Monday as the Panthers will face Alcorn State at 7:30 p.m. in Lorman, Miss.
