BATON ROUGE, La. – The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers returned to their winning ways Sunday, grabbing a much-needed win at Southern by a 3-1 scoreline.

Freshman striker Bailey LaBauve scored the first two goals of her Prairie View A&M career less than 10 minutes apart in the second half that erased a 1-0 Southern advantage. Santa Clarisa Maldonado added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute.

The Lady Panthers (8-5-1) maintained third place on the Southwestern Athletic Conference table with a 5-2 league record, tied with Alabama State. Prairie View A&M visits Montgomery to face the Lady Hornets next Sunday.

The Jaguars (1-13) fell to 1-6 in SWAC play.

Playing without two of their top scorers, the Lady Panthers played methodically and deliberately in the first half, placing a strong emphasis on defense. PVAMU held the Jaguars to only one shot during a scoreless first half, while placing three of their own on the Southern goal.

Southern's Matilda Boehm opened the scoring with an unassisted goal barely four minutes after the restart to give the Jaguars a 1-0 lead. Playing from behind awoke the Lady Panthers, who did not waste much time levelling the score as LaBauve found the back of the net in the 54th minute off a pass from Maldonado.

In the 63rd minute, LaBauve grabbed the lead for the Lady Panthers, heading in a goal to complete a string of passes from Kara Ballard and Arianna Rountree, who were both credited with assists.

LaBauve would return the favor to Maldonado 10 minutes later, sending her a pass that Maldonado would finish to stretch PVAMU's lead to 3-1.

Senior goalkeeper Dominique Dillon made nine saves en route to the victory. She even blocked a penalty kick from Southern's Jami Blackston in the 73rd minute to maintain the Lady Panthers' two-goal lead.

The Lady Panthers return to action Friday when they visit Alabama A&M. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
