Lady Panthers Drop Doubleheader To Abilene Christian

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

ABILENE, Texas - Prairie View A&M dropped its first two games of 2015 in different styles as they fell 8-0, 6-2 to Abilene Christian on Friday afternoon.

In the season opener, Abilene Christian jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and never looked back as they recorded an 8-0 victory.

ACU began the first inning with a leadoff triple and scored the first run via a sacrifice fly.  PVAMU allowed a single, walk and a fielding error to move the next two runners into scoring position which set up a two-RBI single for the 3-0 deficit.

The Lady Panthers' best shot at scoring came in the second inning as they had runners at second and third with no outs.  However, the opportunity ceased to an end quickly with two strikeouts and a groundout.  From that point, it was all ACU as they tacked on five runs over the next two innings while PVAMU was held to two hits the remainder of the way.

Freshman Destinee Williams led the way with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate which also included a stolen base.  Junior outfielder Peyton Simms had the team's third hit.  Junior pitcher Monica Cartwright fell to 0-1 on the season with a strikeout.

The Lady Panthers had a late breakdown in game two as ACU rallied for five runs over the final two innings for a 6-2 decision.

ACU moved ahead 1-0 in the first but PVAMU answered with its first runs of the season in the second as Jalla Johnson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded followed by Alisa Navarro's sacrifice RBI to center which scored Simms.

Sophomore pitcher Olivia Lacewell was cruising from that point with scoreless innings in the second, third and fourth.  PVAMU missed a prime opportunity to tack on additional runs in the fifth as they left a pair of runners in scoring position while ACU moved ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth after a two-run homer.

Back-to-back singles by Simms and Williams were the highlights of the sixth but the Lady Panthers would fail to capitalize on the momentum as ACU made it a 6-2 margin in the sixth after scoring three runs.

Alexandra Losoya, Williams, Kylar Ward-Flowers and Simms had one hit each with Simms and Ward-Flowers scoring runs.  Lacewell dropped her first decision of the season while recording three strikeouts.

PVAMU is back in action on Tuesday as they'll face Houston-Victoria at 2 p.m. in Victoria, Texas.
