HOUSTON – The Houston Baptist Huskies scored seven unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings Friday, then added six more for good measure as they defeated Prairie View A&M 13-3 in the season opener for both teams.
HBU's Taylor Wright allowed three earned runs over six innings to pick up the win.
Alberto Aveytia absorbed the loss for Prairie View A&M, allowing four earned runs over five innings and striking out two.
Reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year
Cody Den Beste picked up right were he left off in 2014, belting a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to cut HBU's lead to 7-3.
A Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2014, Den Beste was named the SWAC's preseason Defensive Player of the Year this week.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the top of the third inning when
Connor Wrye led off the frame with a triple to center field. PVAMU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as
Walter Wells followed and knocked an RBI single.
Cassidy Land pitched the final three innings for Prairie View A&M, giving up six runs, though only two of them were earned. The Panthers committed four errors during the game.
Zach Nehrir knocked in four runs for the Huskies, while Andrew Alvarez plated three runs for the home team.
The Panthers and Huskies play the second game of their weekend series Saturday. First pitch from Husky Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
