GRAMBLING, La. -- Five Prairie View A&M players scored in double figures Monday as the Panthers cruised to a 95-44 win at Grambling State.
Tre Hagood scored 15 points and handed out four assists, while
Reggis Onwukamuche posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Panthers (9-16) to their third straight win, and seventh triumph in the last nine games.
The win improved the Panthers' record to 7-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Grambling State (2-21) remained winless in 13 SWAC contests.
Jayrn Johnson came off the PVAMU bench to score 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Zach Hamilton entered the game as a reserve and scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
Not to be forgotten,
Montrael Scott, Prairie View A&M's leading scorer this season, scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Scott also handed out three assists in the game.
Prairie View A&M turned in an all-around dominating performance Monday, as the Panthers' 95 points was the most they have scored in a game this season. In addition, the 44 points scored by Grambling State was the fewest scored by a PVAMU opponent this season.
The Panthers wasted little time setting the tone for Monday's game as they jumped out to a six-point lead less than five minutes into the game.
John Brisco knocked down a 3-pointer with 15:21 remaining in the first half to give the Panthers an 8-2 advantage.
Prairie View A&M continued to pour it on as the first half progressed. The Panthers went on a 15-3 run following Brisco's trey to take a 24-9 lead with 8:59 left to play in the opening period.
The visitors took their first 20-point lead with 5:50 remaining before halftime at 31-11. The Panthers took a 43-19 lead into halftime.
The Panthers shot 49 percent (17 of 35) from the floor in the first half, while holding the Tigers to 23 percent shooting (6 of 26). The Panthers were equally efficient from the 3-point arc, making four out of their eight long-range shots in the first half.
Onwukamuche was part of Grambling's offensive problems in the first half, as he blocked three shots during the game's first 20 minutes and four in the game.
Prairie View A&M continued to put the ball in the basket with ease in the second half as the Panthers hit 57 percent (21 of 37) of their field-goal attempts after the midgame break.
In recording their second consecutive sweep of the Jackson State-Grambling State trip, the Panthers shot 53 percent (38 of 72) from the floor for the game, their second best shooting performance this season and best showing away from home.
Brisco and
Jacoby Green scored eight points apiece for the Panthers, with Green doling out four assists.
Avery Lomax scored seven points for Prairie View A&M, followed by six points from
Karim York and four points from
Charleston Dobbs.
Grambling State turned the basketball over 32 times during the game, while Prairie View A&M had only 16 giveaways. The discrepancy yielded a 44-6 Prairie View A&M advantage in points off turnovers.
The Panthers return to action Saturday when they host Mississippi Valley State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
